giddyup Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 Suddenly started getting these ads as soon as my phone is opened. I can hit the X and they disappear, but how do I stop getting them? Also my phone has started using a lot of battery power, even when WiFi is turned off. before it would last days without charging, now I have to do every day. What's sapping the power?
lungbing Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 Download an app called "DNS-changer" and open it and select a DNS called "No-ads". That's it. If you restart your phone you'll have to reselect "No-ads" as the app seems to get turned off upon restart. 1 1
mtls2005 Posted August 17, 2021 Posted August 17, 2021 Did this just arise recently? How long has this been happening? Did it begin after you installed a new app? You probably have been phished either on the web or via an embedded message (SMS, any messaging app). I'd look for apps which were recently installed (either in the app list, or in Settings, Apps...), which look odd or game-y. Long press, select i, force stop then uninstall. https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/2765944?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid Scroll down to the Android section Step 1: Remove problem apps On an Android phone or tablet, press and hold your device's power button. On your screen, touch and hold Power off Power. Your device starts in safe mode. You'll see "Safe mode" at the bottom of your screen One by one, remove recently downloaded apps. Learn how to delete apps. Tip: To remember the apps that you remove so that you can add them back, make a list. After each removal, restart your device normally. See whether removing that app solved the problem. After you remove the app that caused the problem, you can add back the other apps that you removed. Learn how to reinstall apps. Step 2: Protect your device from problem apps Make sure Play Protect is on: Open your Android device's Google Play Store app Google Play. Tap Menu Menu and then Play Protect. Turn on Scan device for security threats. Consider purchasing and downloading an anti-malware app, like Malwarebytes. Step 3: Stop notifications from a certain website If you're seeing annoying notifications from a website, turn off the permission: On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app Chrome. Go to a webpage. To the right of the address bar, tap More More and then Info Information. Tap Site settings. Under "Permissions," tap Notifications. If you don't see "Permissions" or "Notifications," the site doesn't have notifications turned on. Turn the setting off. 1

Well it will be back to normal for a time but most likely if you install that rouge app or visit that website or open that SMS again they will be right back..I installed AdAway on mine works a bit like the suggested earlier DNS changer except this blocks a list of known adservers actually at the phone using the hosts file

It won't show up if your device isn't compatible, and anyway, it clearly says it's not available on Playstore.

The link you just added clearly says it's not available on Playstore. "AdAway is not available on Google Play! It was removed by Google due to Violation of section 4.4 of the Developer Distribution Agreement. Please install it from F-Droid".

F-droid I think only carries the latest version ? but you can also download the latest and all previous app versions and all the source code from github https://github.com/AdAway/AdAway/releases download the app to an sdcard insert in phone and install the app from sdcard or connect phone to pc and download app straight to phone and install app. no need for Google Play. 1

And Play Store is not the only app store......... Some would argue that Google is an ad business so perhaps not surprising and possibly for interest to some here is a link actually from 8 years ago about kicking them and other ad blockers off - https://www.zdnet.com/article/google-kicks-ad-blocker-apps-off-play-store/ 1
