Just get a prescription and take it to the nearest pharmacy for a fraction of the cost

I don't know if this is valid for all medication, but I had a doctor tell me that in Thailand you don't need a prescription, so I've been getting eye medication by going in and bringing along an old container.

Yes, the safest comment. Just remember the guy who posted something acidic on Tripadvisor about a certain hotel. Quite remorseful after what ensued. Best to just say you're ecstatically jumping for joy after seeing the bill.

This is not Trip Advisor, as stated I was happy with the service and treatment, the only thing that upset me was the non compassion shown by the girl regarding the cost of the CT scan but it was 3am so maybe in hind site she could be forgiven, the Hospital has always given me great treatment including a broken Leg one month ago.

I can't figure out form your post what the final CT cost was, but  28,000bht total for "CT, X Ray's, Ultra sound plus blood and Urine tests" and presumably also doctor consultation, is not at all high

thank you Sheryl,  and that's exactly what I thought when i was replying. OP didn't confirm exactly the CT scan price.

I told the miserable girl that I had CT scan before for 15,000bht, the bill shows they charged 13,000bht obviously trying it on, I'm just gobsmacked at the medicine charge!!

Lesson learned, always go to a Pharmacy outside a hospital rather than use in-hospital facility. I have found it is the same in Thailand as in the USA.

Was at a well known Pattaya hospital last week, for a non painful condition.

Simply crazy pricing, including one small procedure that was FIFTEEN times the price I previously paid in a clinic.

I asked for a prescription to take with me.

"Cannot. Not same your country."

I took the medical report and myself off to Fascino pharmacy, and paid a quarter of the price for the meds.

An MRI can take 20-40 min and is quite loud.

Not sure what brand of watch you have but that would be a CT time (with long period of wait and shot periods of scan) - an abdominal MRI takes hours - 2.5 hours or more for full abdominal with contrast in my experience (multi).

Overbrook Hospital Chiang Rai recently charged me 15000 baht for consultation CAT chest scan and blood tests. I also received a cd of the CAT scan results. The heart specialist doctor was unable to competently read the scan results but I understand the the reading of the scan results are normally interpreted by the radiologist.

Sorry I can not cite the source but I remember reading this past year that prices in Bangkok's leading private hospitals had increased by more than 100% in the past 10 years.

The same happens after the tsunami.

I went to my local government hospital with an abscess in my neck. After a 300bt examination by the doc I was told that the operation could not be carried out there and that I must go to the city hospital 40kms away. They tried to put me in an ambulance at the bargain price of 4k bt. I said no. 3k bt? Nope. 1.6k bt? Nope.

I walked out to the road and caught a bus for 40bt.

Operation carried out, night on a saline drip. In the morning doctor said "all ok you can go home".

Cost, 4k bt.

The point here is that everything is open to negotiation.

Although, if one's in pain I can see this being a lesser priority.

I never get drugs from the hospital - complete rip off. Just get a prescription and take it to the nearest pharmacy for a fraction of the cost

What about this?  I have to go back to the hospital for blood tests and prescription adjustments/refills every 3 months, and the wife and I have been led to believe that we can only get my meds at the hospital pharmacy.  I'm currently taking about 22 tabs a day.  The hospital is Srinagarend in Khon Kaen.

Can/should I get my prescriptions filled outside at any major pharmacy for cheaper?

It happened to me in the same hospital in Hua-hin, for removing an inflamed fat bumb, they start asking 10,000 thb.

After negotiation the price went down to half.

In that same hospital I've got a ct scan for the price of 23,000 thb, when I went to a private clinic they let me do the ct-scan also in Bangkok-HH hospital for 14,000 thb.

It has nothing to do with help but only with money at the private hospitals.

But for what reason? Besides pure profit?

There are very good valid reasons.  Just look at how much a merc or a porsche  have gone up since 2010!!

Almost certainly as long as you can find the same or equivalent at the pharmacy and depending on how competitive the pharmacy is.

Take your current meds to a couple and ask them if they have and how much. You don't have to buy but at least you will know.

300bht is an odd price as government hospitals charge 50bht for a doctor's examination.

Government hospital will supply the drugs even cheaper.

I suggest you check with the pharmacies as a first step.  Show them the pills.  I was unable to get my prescription for statins filled anywhere but the hospital.  Hope your experience is different

Which hospital is this and where is the hospital located? I think we should boycott some of these greedy hospitals.

I find that the prices of hospital services are not publicly displayed so that they can charge different prices for different people.

No doubt medical treatment is a lot more expensive at private hospitals in Phuket at least, and rising, but I do like the fact you can normally just walk in and see a Doctor. On my last visit for serious lower back I was told take Ibuprofen for a week and come back if it was still there, no tests or x-rays.  I was surprised and a little sceptical as I was almost totally immobile. Bought the pills at a cheap pharmacy and they worked, never went back.  Government hospitals I have been told now also have a Farang rate?
