Thai Health Department Proposes Requiring All Pregnant Women to Work from Home

BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s Department of Health is proposing a new regulation which will require all pregnant women to work from home, to help curb COVID-19 infections and death rates among this vulnerable group.

Dr. Sophon Mekthon, assistant to the public health minister, said the proposal will be submitted to the Public Health Ministry’s committee on emergency medical and public health operations after the ministry discussed problems associated with caring for pregnant women, who face a COVID-19 death rate 2.5 times higher than most other people.

He said the main problem now is fear among pregnant women about the possible side effects of COVID-19 vaccines. Another problem is that healthcare facilities, which offer prenatal care services, are failing to refer COVID-19 infected pregnant women to larger facilities capable of handling their deliveries.

A group of health advocates is also calling for better care of pregnant women during the pandemic, saying many infected women have been rejected by their prenatal care providers, who claim they were not able to handle deliveries for COVID-19 infected mothers.

Countless Thai men just fell out of their hammocks.

Does anyone know how to stop women getting pregnant?

Good that they are protecting mothers to be , I imagine the menfolk may reluctantly relinquish a bit of washing, hoovering, cleaning , ironing, baby changing, shopping, ironing, perhaps as a treat at weekends, gardening , car wash etc so the ladies  keep their skills fresh for when they return to the workplace. Remember slack wives natter.

Given most women work in factories, building sites or farms. How does the general expect them to work at home?

Nice headline - not practical for all but government employees and a few office workers.

Does no one in their high castle actually think about things before they make these announcements?

How many Thai women are there in the workforce, who are pregnant and can still effectively work from home? What stage of pregnancy, as soon as she knows, she will be asked to work from home?

Those working in supermarkets, mum and dad stores, restaurants, hotels, bars, hairdressers, stores of any kind, petrol stations, coffee shops, pharmacies, factories, rice fields, rambutan and Durian orchards...they can all.work from home?

Men. Typical. Great idea, protect pregnant women, but have no idea or the impact of practicalities.

That'll work well for street vendors and the like?

I can slow them down to once a year if that helps.
