Popular Post canthai55
“Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live. And unselfishness is letting other people's lives alone, not interfering with them. Selfishness always aims at creating around it an absolute uniformity of type. Unselfishness recognizes infinite variety of type as a delightful thing, accepts it, acquiesces in it, enjoys it. It is not selfish to think for oneself. A man who does not think for himself does not think at all. It is grossly selfish to require of one's neighbor that he should think in the same way, and hold the same opinions. Why should he? If he can think, he will probably think differently. If he cannot think, it is monstrous to require thought of any kind from him. A red rose is not selfish because it wants to be a red rose. It would be horribly selfish if it wanted all the other flowers in the garden to be both red and roses.” ― Oscar Wilde, The Soul of Man and Prison Writings 9

Popular Post simon43
Greed and selfishness are 2 natural human traits. Unselfishness, generosity, modesty etc are not natural human traits. It takes great effort to eliminate greed and selfishness from your body.... 2 1

Popular Post spidermike007
You know what I consider to be a selfish person? One with children (or dogs) who do not behave, and let them run around and terrorize the neighborhood, a movie theatre, a restaurant, or anyone around them. And when you say something to them, they reply with something inane like "they are four year old children. How am I supposed to control them, or keep them quiet?" My response? So, who is the parent, and who is the child, in this equation? Gets them every time. Food for thought for lousy parents with rowdy kids.

(1) Wilde v. Queensberry To be fair Wilde asking others not to interfere with his life is hardly surprising given that he was a rampant homosexual, so yes him asking to let other flowers blossom is obviously selfishness as well. And yet, and yet, it is hard to see fault in the logic of his words. It is selfish to expect others to live according to your laws. Of course, we all have to do that, even if some homosexuals do not like it. Edited August 31, 2021 by Tanomazu

They are of course right, one can not control a 4 year old child, or keep it quiet. It doesn't make them look foolish if you then tell the parents they're children. You have a strong point about the dogs on the other hand. 2

xtrnuno41
It is in humans. At one point you come to a situation and you are selfish. Take all so called leaders in the world and companies, they are all selfish! Then being that, you implement that to other people or you try to kill that by your selfish actions. People can easily follow "some leader" , history proven it and still continuing. Maybe the only man in the world who wasnt selfish, would be Jezus then? But ok he died, because of ... selfish people.

If you cannot control them, why are you the parent? No, it's selfish to expect parents to live as prisoners in their house so that single guys can go enjoy themselves. That is why any court in the world will tell anyone who complains about the noise of children that it is expected and you have to suck it up. Many cases where homeowners have complained about the noise of children due to nurseries next door. The courts always told the parties the nurseries can make as much noise as they want. See, children are the future taxpayers, doctors, firemen, dentists, the reason why society continues. That is why it is in society's interest to indulge parents with children and why the courts do so. With dogs it's a different story of course. 2

You do know that many children enter pre school in Thailand around the age of 3 they appear to accept being controlled most of the day. I'm with Mike on this one, don't expect 100% compliance but control yes. People want children to play take them to a place with appropriate facilities.

I'm well aware, that is the case around the whole world. However, if you've ever been inside a Kindergarten you will see children screaming, running everywhere, making a lot of noise. There is no 100% control of 4 year olds anywhere. It's impossible. Parents do take children to appropriate facilities, but sometimes they may want to go see a movie. If the child then becomes restless and makes noise that's just part of life isn't it? 1
WhiteBuffaloATM
first check definition of “selfish”, i.e. lack of consideration for others, focused substantially on oneself. “why” ? human default evolutionary survival instinct. requires “unselfish” co-operation override, a weaker human trait…….oddly without co-operation ( polar opposite of selfish) human society could not exist…..so paradox is by being cooperative for survival is actually a lesser form of selfish………
