People living along river banks and in low-lying areas in Bangkok and Chainat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Lop Buri, Ayutthaya, Saraburi, Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi  provinces are advised to brace for possible flooding from overflowing Chao Phraya and Pasak rivers from tomorrow until October 5th.

The flood alert was issued today (Thursday) by the secretary of the National Water Resources Directorate, Samroeng Sangphuwong.

In the announcement, he said parts of the northern, north-eastern, central and eastern regions of Thailand had experienced heavy to very heavy rain from September 22nd to 24th, due to the influence of a monsoon trough moving over the lower northern, central and lower north-eastern regions, compounded by a low pressure cell looming over the central region.

We are in Pathum Thani.

Local head chap has been broadcasting (from a boat) to move your valuables upstairs if you are on the "wrong" side of the flood barrier (road).

No sign of sandbags being available yet but many of the low lying houses are already flooding at the ground floor.

But didn't he say that Bangkok would not flood this year?  ????

Must be a precautionary measure then ????

If you have a motor vehicle, just make sure that it is not parked on the ground floor of where you are staying, just in case.

Good luck to you! Our house in Rangsit was under 3m of water for months in 2011. it was a terrible experience.

Rangsit might be a perfect reflective example of why flooding is so prevalent among the BKK Metro lowlands.

Historically, Rangsit [and other broad locales] was set aside as a natural agricultural area with numerous khlongs criss crossing the region.

Look at that area today. One big slab of "developed" areas - shopping malls, business and industrial parks, university outlets, extended motorways and transit monstrosities, etc....

Don't have to be too wise and observant to understand what's wrong with this picture.

You are right. Building on flood plains is asking for trouble. However, 30 years ago, when my wife said that she wanted to have a house in Muang Ake, I didn't question her choice because I wasn't in Thailand and I knew little about Thai geography or history. Now, the area is undesirable because people know that the government cannot protect these low-lying districts from flooding.

3 The complex question of whether the waters will run downhill or uphill will need an expensive engineers report. This will be tendered to match "The largest envelope". Too Mutt info....
