Maskless Foreigners in Bangkok

What do people think you should do when you encounter presumably newly-arrived, smug-looking foreigners in Bangkok who refuse to wear a mask?

 

I was in Centralworld yesterday and have never in the past year (when it has been open) seen anyone walk around without a mask, Thai or foreigner.

 

Yesterday I saw 5 people not wearing masks (they were pulled down over their chins) - all foreigners - white males - separately strolling around looking smug and very pleased with themselves. My outraged (Thai) wife warned me not to get involved and instead went to look for security, of which, of course, there was none to be found anywhere.

 

If people don't want to respect the rules during a pandemic, why come here at all? Why go into a public place and refuse to obey the rules? Stay home instead.

 

Personally I think they should be arrested, fined and deported to set an example. They're deporting others for worse reasons these days, on the spurious grounds of being a danger to the public...

Well  before new tourists arrivals there have been a cadre of "rebels" wearing the mask pulled down over their nose. I avoid them myself...not because I'm worried about infection...only because they act like adolelscents who can't behave in a society in which they are guests.

relax, go to security, normally found at the exit or entrance or better still go to the info counter and complain. You will always get these people who will not wear masks or half wear them

You should come to rural Thailand, scores of Thai's not wearing masks, I see it day in day out, but to be honest that is out doors.

I can't get all hot and bothered about others, the other day I jumped out of the truck as couldn't park, as about to enter the post office realised no mask ???? popped to a little shop and asked for a mask, given without hesitation, I had no small change, so came back and gave the old lady about a few baht after my post office visit no problem.

There will always be those who need to be different or difficult just ignore them.

To be fair, the risk of catching Covid in Rural Thailand is very low and always has been. I've never worn a mask and I reckon only about 20% of the villagers around here are wearing them.

 

That aside I do think that the O/P is over reacting. Simply give the 'offenders' a wide berth and just get on with life.

Last week, I was walking up Sukhumvit in BKK;

 

A couple, both white, in their 40-50's completely annoying.

 

He was just wearing his shoes and a short, nothing else. A bodybuilder type. Full of tatoos.
His female partner looked similar.

First, who walks halve naked through a busy town? Would they do this in Melbourne, NY, London, Brussels etc?

 

Then the annoying part, none had a mask.

 

Get them out.

And everybody knows everybody, same around  where I live, but we all put a mask on when we moving from one point of the village to the other. 

 

I do not care when I meet falangs withoud masks, but some of them lookingt at me like, are you going to say something, and I will tell you how I feel about it. You can read their body language they are there to provoke, or they are just ignorants without respect for the locals. I see plenty of people not wearing face-masks... the area I live in is mostly Thai’s so naturally, it is mostly Thai’s I see not wearing a face-masks.  

In an area with more foreigners there will be ’some’ foreigners not wearing face masks, they will stand out more because they are foreigners and people will get twisted up and make a thread about it...  all a bit pathetic really.

Personally, I wear one all the time when out in Public....   I also wore one recently in the UK when 95% of the population wasn’t (in a supermarket or busy street etc)...

If a moron (wearing a MAGA hat or not) wants to splatter their brains all over the road, and the police don't care, that's up to them. If idiots refuse to wear masks in shopping malls and disrespect the hygiene laws of another country in the midst of a public health emergency, thereby endangering the health of all those around them, then they should be deported or jailed - or both.

I once sat having a few beers while some local idiots chased each other around fighting and hacking at each other with machetes just down the road, one dead in the end.

People who refuse to respect the local health laws of a country they are guests in, in the middle of a global pandemic, should be deported. In their own country, they can get their tin hats and pitchforks out and protest against 5G, voting machines, masks or vaccines, or whatever current deluded rubbish they want to believe in.

 

But in this country, they should respect the law.

Some of the laws / regulations are utter idiocy....  common sense and balance are also important. 

 

I’m happy to wear a mask in public places (all indoor places) - but there really is no need to wear a mask on a beach or in a wide open park etc... but walking down Sukhumvit road, of course wear a mask. 

 

One of the laws is that we all have to wear a mask in our family car...  we walk out of our house, into our car and have to put a mask on - This is just silly !!!  - respect the law?... no not all of them.

But in my OP, I specifically limit this to malls, and by extension to other enclosed public spaces, where ALL Thais are wearing masks. Not villages, beaches, private cars etc etc.

No need to convince anybody. it's the law here - certainly in public places, and as such should be respected.

 

There are 'many' laws in Thailand you couldn't convince me are right, but while I live in this country, I have to respect them and would have to accept the serious consequences of not doing so.

 

Perhaps that's what's needed here - the threat and likelihood of more serious consequences being dealt out to people who refuse to follow their health laws.

Please show me where I said or wrote anything about visitors not having to respect the law.
