The huge welfare state is the downfall of the West.

Australia.

https://ipa.org.au/publications-ipa/media-releases/growing-welfare-dependency-requires-honest-debate-and-urgent-action

"Approximately 2.1 million Australians (aged 15+) are currently receiving welfare through either the NDIS, Disability Support Pension (DSP), Jobseeker, or Youth Allowance."

I wonder how much of it can be attributed to generous welfare systems that get taken advantage of.

Why don't you leave the man alone and mind your own business? His lifestyle choices  have nothing to do with you!

  • Current annual cost of welfare / social services in Oz is AUD$191.8 billion. Personally I would not define welfare payments as 'generous', it is extremely difficult to live on welfare in Oz. e.g. Age

I freely admit I got that call wrong.

I thought there would be a swing away from both major parties because the people genuinely want change.

Turns out, they just want some more freebies off Albo.  Who would have thought?  :cheesy:

I suppose why not give out more freebies.  After all, Australia is ONLY 1 trillion dollars in debt.  :cheesy:

I said Australia is broke, and has 1 trillion dollars of debt, and S&P recently warned both major political parties that Australia is at risk of losing its AAA rating.

Another member posted Australia has become a nation of bludgers, and I have posted some stats that tend to prove his argument.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03-17/chalmers-deficit-federal-budget-confirmation/105060688

"A decade of budgets in the red has been forecast by the federal government for some time, but a weak Australian dollar had increased revenues from minerals exports and fuelled speculation the treasurer might be able to eke out one last surplus."

They forecast Australia will run at a loss for the next 10 years, further blowing out the 1 trillion debt.

Australia is maxing out its credit card.

Quite a list of freebies, and more freebies within the freebies.

Move to the US

The USA just lost its AAA credit rating.  I suggest Australia isn't far behind.  S&P have already warned Australia is at risk.

Australia is only a small economy.  If we lose our AAA credit rating, the AUD will take a bigger hit.

Should be some interesting proposals for tax reform come out of the productivity round table meeting.

Here's one.

Instead of raising the GST, why can't Gina, Twiggy and Clive just dig more holes?

Pretty well can guarantee tax increases in one form or another. The "productivity" label is a joke.

Tax and spend is the Labor way.

Never a thought about reducing wastage.

More like borrow and spend.

Australia is broke.  No surplus expected for another 10 years.

There will have to be new taxes or tax increases, or both, just to pay the interest on the below.

They will be looking for money everywhere, and from everyone, including pensioners.

https://australiandebtclock.com.au

Only a $10 billion deficit last financial year.  A surplus is not predicted for another 10 years.

The way you "sell" a $10 billion deficit to the people is tell them we are doing a great job because the deficit was forecast to be $27 billion.
