A total of 555 road accidents were recorded on New Year’s Eve in Thailand, resulting in 65 deaths and 535 people injured, on the third day of the long New Year holidays, according to the Road Accidents Prevention and Reduction Centre.

Chiang Mai logged 26 road accidents, the most in one day for any province in the country and the highest number of injured at 23, while the north-eastern province of Udon Thani recorded the highest death toll at 5.

36.4% of the accidents were caused by speeding, 34.77% by drunk driving and 16.4% by cutting in front of other vehicles.

Total road accidents for the first three days of the holidays are 1,339, resulting to 153 deaths and 1,322 injured.

Actually, a lot of cars on the CM roads these days have Bangkok licence plates.

555... road accidents.  What an oxymoron.

And, 1/3 from DUI.  That is very high, I guess they never saw the government memo request not to drink and drive.

'Authorities have set up 1,907 checkpoints, with 66,969 officers deployed nationwide, to ensure motorists comply with traffic rules and regulations.' What an utter waste of money!  Checking vehicle documentation does not take bad drivers off the road. RTP force do nothing all year round then, as a reward, get paid overtime for 14 days work during the 2 X 7 'dangerous days.'  If accidents are down by 25% it's because traffic is down by 25%; it's nothing to do with Thailand's lazy and inept police force.

But they are masters where drink is concerned.

Everybody saw the Government Memo on not Drink Driving

Of the DUI cases, 90 % chose to ignore the Memo, and the remaining 10 % could not read it due to illiteracy

555?...yup     as they say in text messages...555

Majority of them were happening while the officials were playing with their phones or themselves under the tents.????  Seven days of extra pay for doing nothing!  What a life T.I.T.

Obviously fake news, according to this forum all figures from the government are fabricated.

If the population have all lost their jobs and starving, how can they possibly afford to travel.

Less than in previous years.

Could it be that Thais slowly learn how to drive?

There's certainly an issue with people from flatter areas such as Isaan and probably Bangkok suddenly confronted with hills and not know how to handle it.

In areas such as National Parks where there are winding hilly roads it's common to see vehicles heading downhill with brakes overheating. I've been a passenger in some. I've also seen cars that have stopped on a hill and don't know how to start again on a hill. I've had to drive a car up a ramp in a car park as the guy couldn't pull away after sopping half way up the ramp.

Some need to learn to to drive slowly as well.

It doesn’t matter what corner of Thailand you’re in, Bangkok plates everywhere!

You mean where a lack of common sense is concerned.

Means little, many people register their vehicles in Bangkok rather than locally.

Well I sometimes get behind something that seems to go very slowly. Quite often it's one of those old small Mazda pickups. I can't remember the name but they seem to always be driving slowly.

It's not so much speed that's the problem as appropriate speed which so many can't seem to achieve.
