NorthernRyland
Does anyone here live close to a rice paddy and could share any experiences? When they're wet are the insects out of control? I've ridden past them on bikes before and remember being overwhelmed by the humidity but maybe that's not in all cases. Smell also is something to consider. Thanks for your feedback. Popular Post CharlieH
Got them across the 3m road in front never encountered anything like you describe. In fact they are around my home on 3 sides. ???? They are not permanent. Rice is grown in the wet season. Other crops the rest of the time, like tabacco or corn etc.

Yeah that's the situation I'd be in, a wall and then directly on 2 sides a rice paddy. Feels like it could be a steamy bug pit. ????

Popular Post Nojohndoe
In locations where paddy is a once a year event there is not really a problem because the "wet" time is relatively short and as a micro ecosystem usually does not generate excessive bugs . For the reast of the year is too dry to cause bug issues. For things like mosquitoes it is more likely residual wet places around the house are more of an issue. 6

ChaiyaTH
I never seen any snakes in Thailand but in the time I rented a year around water streams and rice paddies I have seen at least 10 during 1 raining season. Mainly at night on the asfalt roads along houses and village. I'd buy a urinoir, then you are safe at night taking a pee unlike the news stories. Popular Post pomchop
i lived surrounded by big rice paddies for several years...had a klong that ran along my perimeter wall. It was wonderful as beautiful fields of bright green turning to amber...got to watch the planting and harvest from my deck which was always interesting to me...the workers were mostly all women coverd head to toe who would laugh and talk sing song as they worked from 8 am til 5 pm......then came the men with big machines to haul rice off and plow the remaining stubble under..after harvest it sat idle and sun baked it hard as a rock til the rains came and then on one particular night dozens of Thais showed up as all hundreds of big frogs emerged from mud and were harvested....never had a snake inside my walls as they seemed to prefer the klong which was full of frogs small fish etc...next door was a big limestone mountain with caves full of bats who came out at night and took care of the mosquitoes....i loved it all....then one day trucks appeared and in a matter of hours/days big portions were filled with dirt and all kinds of buildings eventually went up destroying what was once a beautiful sight...i sold out and moved on as no doubt soon would follow more buildings, karaoke, etc etc... 7 3

tonray
We have some rice fields across the road from our gated MooBaan....the biggest issue is not insects....they're everywhere anyway...the biggest issue is a few times a year between crops they burn the stubble after harvest.....the smoke makes the pool unusable for the day and the ash falls on everything so the next day our outdoor bench/table ect need to be cleaned....disgusting practice..but this is Thailand where pollution doesn't matter 1
Andycoops
My wife's paddy is 5metres from the back gate if our garden, in more than 10years never had those problems you describe. Of course there are mosquitoes but if you take precautions, especially at dusk then you learn to live with them.
Popular Post oobar
After living in Bkk for 27 years, this is where we built and retired in rural Sisaket 8 years ago. There are bugs in the tropics, and they have their own schedules for appearing, but if your house is tightly screened, none are a problem. No problems at all with the surrounding rice paddies. It can be pretty wonderful in some of Thailand's rice boonies. https://youtu.be/gNs0zDGE070 3 1

bbudd
Paddy other side of perimeter wall Nice cool breeze most of the time No bugs to speak of Lot of frogs when its flooded-love the sound Only negative effect is the rat population after the harvest tends to move a lot Cats and dogs and owls take care of that

statman78
We have a rice paddy along one side of our property, about 2 meters from our wall. No problem with mosquitoes or other insects but as mentioned before, there are a lot of frogs during the wet season. It can get rather noisy at night. Nature does have a habit of making things balance out. Inside the house there will be loads of small lizards darting about over the walls and ceilings eating any luckless insect that happens to land nearby. My house is on a farm with a lake on one side and a seasonally water filled ditch on the other. The rest of the farm is a combination of woodland, fruit trees and rice fields. The only insects which bother me live in the garden and the woodland which is three hundred metres from the house and they are the occasional local mosquitoes which are not difficult to deal with. 1

sead
I would worry about all pesticides being used. And they use alot in Thailand. Coming in your land, chickens, homegrown food etc. Perhaps you can ask the ricepad owner to tell you beforehand so you can run away when he is using pesticides....

Yes indeed, that was my experience living opposite paddy fields in a valley amongst Lanna mountains during the growing and harvesting season. Snakes were daily visitors catching the frogs and rats.

NorthernRyland
Thanks for sharing all of your experiences. It sounds like the biggest concern is snakes and rats, something I never even considered!
