Expect more worrisome variants after omicron, scientists say

By LAURA UNGAR   2 hours ago

Get ready to learn more Greek letters. Scientists warn that omicron’s whirlwind advance practically ensures it won’t be the last version of the coronavirus to worry the world.

Every infection provides a chance for the virus to mutate, and omicron has an edge over its predecessors: It spreads way faster despite emerging on a planet with a stronger patchwork of immunity from vaccines and prior illness.

That means more people in whom the virus can further evolve. Experts don’t know what the next variants will look like or how they might shape the pandemic, but they say there’s no guarantee the sequels of omicron will cause milder illness or that existing vaccines will work against them.

Omicron comes and goes quickly, so less time for mutations to develop. And Omicron will leave millions with natural immunity against the next descendant of Omicron.

Influenza shows up every year and vaccines are recommended.

The difference is that flu vaccines are not very effective.

Bring it on....humans are invincible and shall overcome this with another booster shot.

The other difference is that influenza does not kill more than 5 million people in less than two years. ????

70-90% on younger people and 60% on elderly is not that bad.

How is that different from the COVID "vaccines"?

For one thing, Covid vaccines are very effective in preventing death.

I am sure that you don’t want to die from Covid.

Actually, flu vaccines are also very effective at preventing death. Just as is currently the case with covid vaccines, flu vaccines do a lot better at preventing serious symptoms and death than they do at preventing infection.

  • A 2021 studyexternal icon showed that among adults, flu vaccination was associated with a 26% lower risk of ICU admission and a 31% lower risk of death from flu compared to those who were unvaccinated.
  • A 2018 studyexternal icon showed that among adults hospitalized with flu, vaccinated patients were 59 percent less likely to be admitted to the ICU than those who had not been vaccinated. Among adults in the ICU with flu, vaccinated patients on average spent 4 fewer days in the hospital than those who were not vaccinated.
