BANGKOK,  (TNA) – The Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry and the Commerce Ministry started to export Thai rice to China through the Chinese-Lao railway.

Alongkorn Polabutr, chief advisor to the agriculture and cooperatives minister, said the first lot of rice export to China on 20 train carriages on the railway amounted to 1,000 tons and was delivered to Chongqing in western China.

It was a new and historic chapter for cargo transport on trains which expanded opportunities for trade and income for farmers, business operators and the country, he said.

There is still nothing wrong with exporting the rice, is there?

The newsworthiness of the article, I believe, is that whereas rice was hitherto transported to China by sea, this is the first time that transport was by rail.

Please feel free to start a separate topic about Thailand's trade balance with China.

Weren't Thai farmers just complaining about this railway and the resulting imports from China?

Well, I'm sure some of them will benefit. Then again, if Thailand does, so will China ten-fold...

Dang auto-carrot. !!

The inland train network will bring tremendous benefits in terms of shorter and reliable mode of transport than shipping and will unlock the opportunities for more trade for the hinterlands. Doubt it will change those minds that are conditioned to China bashing.

I don't know..... is China capable of growing and supplying enough food for it's own huge population.....?

I believe they are forward planning and securing the availability to China of all limited commodities. Be they metals, energy sources, water or food... along with supply lines of the same. There is a big picture the rest of the world needs to step back from......

I know a couple of chinese citizens living here that make their living buying up fruits and vegetables by the container load and shipping it to China.

They should have stuck with the original copy: "Rice go China tric-a-trac".
