Warning against traveling to Thailand

I want to go back to visit my family in the UK but am dreading returning to Thailand.

It's been over three years now and my young grandchildren hardly recognise who I am .

But coming back to this!!!

I'll just have to wait a bit longer, I had planned for later next month but articles like this scare the living daylights out of me..

Very informative article though

I share your concern as my case is almost the same as yours. Been here since 8th December 2019 and haven't seen my family or grandchildren since. I was also planning to travel sometime next month but now, I think I must wait for a clear picture.

  • Yes! More of this please. This is the kind of BAD international press that Thailand deserves and will hopefully embarrass them enough into dropping this shambolic, pathetic, ripoff system, which does

  • It's all about the money. Hospitals wants their cut of the foreigner's wallet.

Yes, and this being Thailand, you never know whether the PCR tests and results are proper. That's why I plan to be away till late 2023, hoping that the pandemic is over by then, and Thailand unable to profit from it.

This, 500%. As long as they are able to profit from this scaremongering operation, rest assured they will, Thai style.

Vote with your wallet. Let them rot.

Unfortunately the way tourist are being treated is disgraceful scam after scam Insurance that does not pay out test a d go without quarantine this is just not true requirement to have phone capable of installing tracking devices it goes on and on. It is best to avoid Thailand at all costs until all restrictions of entry removed

This also, it is an organized scam authorised and supported by their incompetent leaders Prayut and Anutin.

I couldn't agree more with your statement.

Name them, shame them, name them, shame them, name them, shame them until they finally get to their senses.

When it comes to the tourism sector, I wish nothing but success to the other neighboring ASEAN nations so Thailand finally comes to their senses and realize they need to drop this whole SHA+, ASQ, Thailand Pass scam operation they have had ongoing for over a year now.

If you truly love Thailand, the best thing you can do is NOT to travel there at the moment, not send a single dime through fintech services such as Transferwise, empty your Thai bank accounts and withdraw your local assets as much as you can, leave as little as possible there.

Because until then, the goons in charge will keep milking people and making a quick buck on the back of this worldwide scaremongering operation, why you may ask? Because they can.

Hit them where it hurts; the wallet.

"empty your Thai bank accounts and withdraw your local assets as much as you can, ..........................................."

Unfortunately, some  "long stayers" have to have 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account just so that we can get a visa to stay here - and have to leave it there for 6 months of the year!

And I do agree with you about it being a scam - legalised corruption whereby the big hotels and private hospitals can make a killing by hospitalising/quarantining people that don't even have any symptoms, but a false positive can force them into an unnecessary 100,000 baht (app) bill - scandalous!

Pure and simple scam - LOS at its worst.  How many new millionaires has Covid created here?  I want to visit family in UK but dread the return. My family will not visit me under this regime; we are effectively imprisoned in Stalag Thailand - unless we make the move out permanent!

This. Always keep in the back of your head that any dime, any cent, any pound, any dollars sent here to support this scam operation is also supporting the junta who illegally seized power and took control of the Kingdom.

Do not come to Thailand, do not support these goons, do not send them any money. Avoid supporting this coup junta regime.

No. It specifically states that if found positive, no refund will be given. Quite a racket. There are such a mountain of deterrents built into this program designed by greedy cowards, one wonders how it is expected to succeed.

Greedy, incompetent and threatening cowards, rather.

This. Plain and simple.

My wife is very angry at this government. Now besides not doing anything to help Thai's, they are making it harder than ever.

I'm sorry for your wife but let it be known she isn't alone feeling that way. They are making it harder than ever for anyone and everyone who has no connections to the 0.5% top brass of the Kingdom, these 0.5% are the ones financially benefiting from this whole scam and gouging operation.

Again, do not come to Thailand for leisure, this is not the right time, not under this crooked administration.

I can see the Thai response already...'It's all a Terrible Misunderstanding'  !!

If it looks like a scam, smells like a scam, quacks like a scam, then it probably is a scam.

Let's hope this well presented, factual article will galvanise the authorites into creating a new more logical system

Probably, but while they are sorting that it, you will most likely still be under 'house arrest' and accruing bills.

What is house arrest?  What if you're in a hotel?  A nightly hotel bill is certainly cheaper than a hospital bill.

One can only hope.

Jet ski scam 2.0, Sick water buffalo scam 2.0, Mama is sick need money for hospital scam 2.0, "I love you too much" scam 2.0.

Of course not, this new "confinement" is the new golden goose scam, they are banking so much money on this. Don't delude yourself, it has nothing to do with health concerns, disease prevention issues, etc. It's all about getting a quick extra buck out of you, insurance scam, forced quarantine (at your expense) scam, etc, etc, etc.

Thailand money number #1.

Wow somebody must have really pulled one over you to be so bitter.

If a traveler staying at their hotel tests positive, the guest has no choice but to be hospitalized at that specific hospital for 7-10 days at their own cost

I'm not sure that is totally correct.

My colleague has some friends that went to Thailand last week and 1 ended up testing positive on day 5.

No hospital for that person, but has too stay inside at Sha+ hotel but are allowed to use pool as long as only 1 person in the pool.

Can get some sun outside as well on roof top

Not sure if the hotels interpret the rules differently, but not all are taken to hospital.

No matter what, i wouldn't book a flight to Thailand right now

A couple of things i won't accept.

Tests before and at arrival and masks outdoors.

I can accept masks while shopping or using public transport.

That's it.

Until those restrictions are lifted i travel to other countries that just require proof of vaccines, no tests and no masks.

Maybe to the point where the airlines will be thinking is it worth it, once they stop then what?

Certainly true. Had to chuckle when I read two days ago: "2,500 passengers from 46 flights arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport". - That's on average 54 passengers per flight, while the planes they arrived with probably have a capacity of 400-500 passengers. So, unless they were mostly chartered flights, or the passengers all flew first class, how does that even make sense for those airlines?

Now in the event that one tests positive on the PCR test and given that the test has many false positives are you allowed to request a second test before you are locked up at 10000 Baht a day?

It would have been an honest and accurate report if it was showing some numbers, statistics: how many people entered Thailand? How many were hospitalised? How many quarantined?

I do not know why all the fuss?

Simple sound advice, "keep away".

Quite the gig.  Thai insurers will be Happy to sell you $50,000 Covid travel policies for a price; Thai labs will be Happy to sell you highly inflated PCR tests (and Heaven Only Knows what the cycle count is.  The higher the cycle count the more positives (฿฿฿)...and then); Thai Hospitals are more than Happy to have you as a forcefully incarcerated Guest whilst charging you ฿10,000+ THB per night even if you're completely without symptoms; and Thai SHA+/ASQ hotels will be more then Happy to supply you with an overpriced room during your forced stay whilst waiting for your mandatory PCR tests.
Money money money money money for all our good, connected friends!!!  Much more profitable than simple - tourism!

In the meanwhile.....

It's like the jet ski scam right out in the open -- apparently all legal -- HERE.  But what it is, is nothing short of kidnapping and extortion.

Thailand and other countries should have realised by now that THEY need to shoulder some of the monetary risk of travelling.  If the passenger has valid certification of being fully vaccinated and tested before they fly then if they become infected during the flight or soon after arrival then all medical costs should be paid for by the Thai government.  Until they do this no-one in their right mind will travel to Thailand or anywhere else.

I'm planning on coming back soon but reading the full article is a bit worrying. If insurance covers it then ok but if not then it's a lot of money at risk.

The problem is, if they know in advance that your insurance will cover it then they will most likely put you on that quarantine list upon arrival. They’re most likely selecting a few percentages of random tourists to take advantage of them. This is what’s happening.

When every tourist has $50,000 insurance, it's clear that the hospitals are trying to suck the maximum out of it. Whether the insurance actually pays afterwards is uncertain. The question of medical necessity is then often asked when it comes to cases without symptoms. The hospitals know that, which is why they insist on payment in advance.

In addition, there are also the cases with wrong PCR test results, or cases where on the 7th day in the hospital there is a negative PCR test, but one is forced to stay in the hospital for 3 more days.

The big differences in the cost calculations of the hospitals is also a nuisance. Legally, the insurance companies have many options to refuse payment or to reduce it accordingly.

Unfortunately, there is a risk that you have paid for insurance, but the insurance does not pay. You have paid for your hotel room in advance, but you cannot use it and you do not receive a refund. You have paid for a PCR test, but the test gives an incorrect result. And you have to spend parts of your vacation in the hospital and you end up with an extremely high hospital bill, even though you feel physically well.

Conclusion: The regulations for tourists are extremely customer-unfriendly and bear the traits of a scam.

True that. And a huge deterrent. Almost as if they wanted the program to fail. Surely, they are not idiotic enough to think many tourists would succumb to their madness and extreme fear and timidity.

Or, are they truly that blind to reality? The reality is, Thailand needs tourists 30X more than tourists need Thailand. This is truly the nation that is being forgotten and left behind.

There are contracts between the hotels, the hospitals, and the labs?  This combination is a recipe for monetary exploitation!!!

In order to "feed" the hospitals "rich foreigners" all that needs to be done is for the labs to manipulate the Covid-19 PCR test cycle counts as cycle counts are not standardized.  Push the cycle count for foreign arrivees to 35, 40, or 45 and it will be pretty much guaranteed to create numerous false positive which in turn make this unholy union a s**t-ton of money.  Then you wonder why Thailand keeps dropping in the global corruption index?

If I was outside of the country, you couldn't pay me to come here right now.
