Popular Post Stocky
Worked for over forty years as a geologist, exploration and mining, gold, diamonds and base metals. Work has taken me through Africa, South America, Europe, and Asia. I've worked two miles down in a South African gold mine, spent months under canvas in the African bush, hacked my way through rain forests and survived winter in a wooden cabin in central Siberia. Now largely retired, I still take on a couple of months consultancy work each year for projects that interest me. Mostly desk studies involving data analysis and 3D modelling; so far less travelling required. I consider myself lucky to have been paid to do something I enjoy.

Been sent to federal court over Global Marine vs Amclyde double drum anchor winch failures... I wrote an email when accessing the first failures and after 5 million dollar engineering FEA study I was proven 100% correct in my observations... Lawyers interviewed me for 20 minutes and let me go...The PhD behind me spent 5 days with them...He was a good dude and is still a friend.. My forte is taking $hit apart without destroying it.. Popular Post rickudon
Trained in Geology, Biology and water management. Worked in oil for a year but didn't like climbing oil rigs, we never found any oil. Then research in electrochemistry trying to evaluate a pollution monitoring device (which had to many issues with salts, so was pretty useless). Next was as an environmental scientist in Northern Australia, investigating potential mining pollution for a mining company; the mine never opened. After this thought my experience would get me a job back in the UK, one and half years unemployed instead. Feeling useless, became a civil servant working on IT until i was made redundant at age 55. Worked part time for a couple of years in a menial job, then moved to Thailand. An illustrious career! Now i spend my time trying to grow fish in a series of ponds, with, as you can guess, limited success...... 1

Popular Post Siamic
I wanted to be Jacques Cousteau. Did a degree in marine zoology, got a job, bought an old yacht for 11000 quid and sailed to the South Pacific. My GF ran off with someone taller, better looking, richer and with a bigger boat in Antigua. Sailed alone to French Polynesia. Spent 20 years sailing all over Polynesia, writing and shooting underwater photos. Was accepted by Getty Images and made a decent living. Got a Distinguished Talent Visa for Australia, sailed to Cairns, tried to settle down. Received an email from someone in Sydney claiming that their dive instructor had told them that I could teach them underwater photography. Turned out she was Thai, cute, half my age and interested in photography. I proposed to her at the end of the week, having never met. That was 16 years ago. When she got an Oz passport we moved to Thailand. I can't imagine where we could have a better quality of life. 5
xeniv23
Helicopter logging and firefighting pilot with short stints flying offshore oil support, moving seismic drills and construction. 45 years of saving my life, sometimes several times in a day. If a young friend or relative expresses the desire to become a helicopter pilot quietly drown them to save them from their disillusionment, the failed marriages and financial disaster. However, despite my best (or worst) efforts I find myself retired with a higher net income and benefits than I ever earned as a working pilot. ?. Beats me.

I designed various ground and space hardware for military, commercial and scientific space projects. Then when I moved to live in south-east Asia, there were no jobs for rocket scientists, so I built small hotels for a while, then became a science teacher in Laos and Myanmar. Nowadays (well this week at least), you'll find me living on the island of Mauritius, where I still work as a science teacher, but online. My spare times are filled with various science projects involving satellites and radio transmitters, which often seem to create hostility and suspicion from the police/military etc in whatever country I'm living in at the time ???? That makes two of us. I designed stuff now flying on ISS. I am one of the founders of a company flying satellites that act as cell towers in space for standard cell phones.
