I did once loan 2,000 Baht to a cute young waitress gal back when that was $100. U.S.$.  She immediately paid the "interest" but I never got the principal back.  She and her man showed up some time later in a refugee camp where I worked, claiming to be Laotian refugees, which at least he may have been.  I blew their plans out of the water on that one.
