Two prominent pro-democracy activists, Arnon Nampa and Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak, were granted temporary bail by the Criminal Court yesterday, February 22nd, with bail security of more than 2 million baht.

 

According to the verdict, the two would be released for three months, or until May 22nd, with similar release conditions of previously-bailed protest leaders that they must not take part in any political movement that threatens the law, cannot do any actions that offended the monarchy, and cannot leave the country.

 

They are also prohibited from leaving their homes from 9:00 PM. to 6:00 AM. of the following day and must wear EM bracelets to track their current location at all times.

"The Bangkok South Criminal Court denied bail to activists Parit "Penguin" Chiwarak and Arnon Nampa despite being granted bail by another court yesterday, their attorney says Wednesday. They will remain detained awaiting trial."

"The South Bangkok Criminal Court has denied bail for Parit Chiwarak and Anon Nampa.

The Court said that Anon's claim that he has to work and take care of his family is not a reason to change the Appeal Court's previous order to deny him bail. It also said that he committed several offenses and is likely to cause more damage if released.

For Parit, the Court requires him to present evidence of his enrollment at Thammasat University, along with a letter from the university, before it consider his bail request.

Meanwhile, the Ayutthaya Provincial Court and the Bangkok South Municipal Court granted Parit bail on all charges under its jurisdiction. The Ratchadapisek Criminal Court also granted Parit and Anon bail yesterday. Due to the South Bangkok Criminal Court's order, the two activists will remain in detention. So far, they have been held for over 6 months pending trial on several counts of royal defamation charges.

The money had exceeded the security amount and reached more than 10 million baht within three hours after the call.
