A friend's wife failed the English test related to her Settlement Visa application.

She has booked another appointment and he is asking if she can complete the online application and upload the appropriate document once she has passed. Or does she have to wait until she gets a positive result.

There is no such thing as a Pass of Fail in IELTS.

It has a band structure.

Canada min - 7 Bands

Aussie min - 8 Bands

Interesting.

From UK.gov website....

Take an approved English language test

You can prove your knowledge of English by passing an approved English language test.

You must pass at least level A1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale for your first visa application.

This looks like a 'fail' to me...

This test has been completed.

IELTS Life Skills A1: Prove your English speaking and listening skills as part of your application to UK Visas and Immigration for 'family of a settled person' visas.

IELTS Life Skills B1: Prove your English speaking and listening skills as part of your application to UK Visas and Immigration for 'indefinite leave to remain or citizenship.

You will be tested for your ability to obtain and gather information, communicate and engage in discussion. The exam will be a conversation between two test takers between 16 and 22 minutes and the session is conducted by an IELTS Examiner. The second test taker’s performance won’t affect your test results.

The example of test topic:

  • family and friends

  • work

  • health

  • leisure activities

  • transportation

  • weather

The IELTS Life Skills results are a little different too. Instead of receiving a band score, you will either get a pass or fail result, where a pass result means you can use your test result for your visa application.

Surely you're not referring to the full Academic or General Training IELTS test.

IELTS life Skills?  Level A1?

Correct ...as above, for settlement visa A1.

not wanting to be a pedant, but you cant fail an IELTS test. what the above actually means, in a clumsy and misleading way, is the applicant has failed to prove achievement of the required level of english competence.
