Electric Vehicles in Thailand

Thailand Number of Registered Vehicles

Thailand Number of Registered Vehicles was reported at 20,756,478 Unit in Feb 2025.

CEIC calculates monthly No of Registered Vehicles by subtracting No of Registered Motorcycles from Total No of Registered Vehicles. The Department of Land Transport provides Total No of Registered Vehicles and No of Registered Motorcycles.

https://www.ceicdata.com/en/indicator/thailand/number-of-registered-vehicles

26.0% of 20.76 million vehicles would be over 5 million vehicles, not 39,075

From January to September 2025, 367,107 cars were produced for domestic sale, an increase of 3.75% from the previous year.

Electric Vehicles: In September 2025, new registrations for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) totaled 11,906 units, a remarkable 80.23% increase from September 2024. From January to September 2025, 104,571 BEVs were registered, a 38.49% increase from the same period in 2024. The total number of BEVs registered as of September 30, 2025, stands at 330,301 units, a 59.85% increase from the previous year.

https://www.nationthailand.com/business/automobile/40057775

26.0% of the total number of registered vehicles being EVs is factually incorrect

Pick a # or a %, and it's mind boggling, especially as total sales of all, are down, I believe.

Those #s don't include the unregistered EV, all those scooters & ebikes I see around town, 2 or 3 wheelers.   Popped over a friend's house yesterday, drop of some papayas, and they had yet another 3 wheeler sitting in carport.   Cute, but not for me, fine for smaller person.

Them locals are way too smart & thrifty :coffee1:

The article means to say "newly" registered vehicles for Oct; that is, just comparing the total number of newly registered vehicles for Oct and not all "currently" registered vehicles which covers decades and decades of vehicles being registered in Thailand.

Your assumption Thailand will follow, is I believe, false.   Two completely separate markets with separate circumstances.   What kickstarted the EV revolution here was BYD & GW

The article is misleading

If you check DLT stats for RY.1 Private passenger car with no more than 7 people

Total number of registrations for RY.1 Private passenger car with no more than 7 people is 39,075 which is the same number as the article

Electric registrations for October for  RY.1 Private passenger car with no more than 7 people is 9,580 not the claimed 10,165

Oh, these autolife and car250 stats articles are definitely not award winning....definitely not always completely accurate....however, they are well within the ballpark numbers.

I expect the article actually adds in a some EVs registrations from some RY categories other than just RY1 although still using a RY1 for a total number.  Yeap, wording and accuracy of their press releases could definitely be improved.

Actually, when I read these monthly reports I look more at the EV chart numbers and breakout, which models sold the most and least, which models show a big drop off or increase in registration vs the headline title & paragraphs of words.

I know that autolife and car250 press releases often show conflicts/questionable grand total and percentages, but I think where they list how many EVs of each model like X-amount BYD Atto, MG4 Electric, Aion, Ora Good Cat, etc....etc...etc., were sold each month (regardless of its DLT RY category) is accurate info.  The numbers "within the chart" is what interest me the most.

You are correct to get to the magic number of 10,165 the following vehicle registrations category need to be added

RY.1 Private passenger car with no more than 7 people 9,580
RY.2 Private passenger cars with more than 7 seats 3
RY.3 Private trucks 32
RY.6 Passenger vehicles for hire carrying no more than 7 people 550
However when you do this the total number of registrations for October increases to 46,628 and the market share is 21.8% not the incorrect 26.0% as quoted in the article

If they wanted to show a higher % market share they should have used only RY.1 vehicle registrations category

as that would resulted in a 24.52% market share against 39,075 RY.1 vehicles

That is such a ridiculous price. I have seen two on the road here, both probably Toyota employees. The 2026 model is already released in North America - less ugly, less plastic, much better range and much faster (338 bhp, 5.1 seconds to 100kmh) they should be slashing the price to get rid of their stock. Even though the 2026 model is much improved it still won't sell if they price it the same.

Due to my job I do know that Toyota have a range of full EV models coming over the next 18 months or so, so they have finally bitten the bullet. However I don't know spec, pricing or anything, I just know the models that will be coming. If they price them anything like they currently do they haven't got a hope. Until that magic SSD / water powered / fairy dust engine that is just around the corner arrives of course.

One of the vehicles I did know about was a new BEV Hilux coming next year which if priced correctly could be hugely popular. But that's a big "if". They have just done the global launch announcement a few minutes ago.

And, erm, a fuel cell version also coming for some unknown reason.

https://media.toyota.co.uk/world-premiere-of-the-all-new-toyota-hilux/

With only a NEDC range of 315km and probably a real world range around 250Km unloaded I can't see the Travo-e being bought to do any type of daily long drives, carrying a full load, etc.   But I guess it would be OK for a "gentleman" type driver who occasionally needs to carry something that can only fit in a truck bed.

Fully agree, and the Riddara does not sell that well.

Lets see how much Toyota can sell for 180% of the price and worse specs.

And then the name...  let me drive you in my Travelo  omg

250km range unloaded if lucky. load that thing up and the range will be 200km at best.

Who is going to buy this? definitely not any delivery company, maybe a toyota die-hard at most, that mediocre warranty doesnt help.

I really like the Prerunner 2.8 Overland in Orange.

The Hilux finally caught up with Mitsubishi Triton and Ford Ranger in the technology and safety, now we got full airbags, auto hand brake, and the best of all: Electric power steering!

The 2.8 Overland Plus 6AT at 1,176,000 THB looks a real nice deal!

Well, I'm going to withhold final judgement on the real world range until Mr Somchai gets a chance to do a test

with the loads he normally carries in Thailand.  I also think the drive battery weight will also prevent rear tipping of the truck...a problem Mr Somchai would like to see resolved with his next pickup truck.😀

Here we go....this CP Foton 2 door with long bed, 88KW LFP battery, 350km WLTP range should be appealing to those who need a BEV work truck vs the more-pricey, smaller battery, less range, 4 door short bed,  gentleman's Toyota Travo-e BEV.

Still a bit pricy for a 2 door pickup that Foton.

The Foton will appeal to local delivery type businesses, they will save a fortune in running costs.  It's clearly only aimed at businesses.

What are they smoking in the Toyota managment? 500 units per year. Never ever. That is maybe the number the japanese mother company wants to hear in order to give a green light. In my opinion this is just another attempt (as with the BZ4) from Toyota to collect government subsidiaries for EV manufacturing...

Interesting that the Toyota software problems/glitches can not be corrected via OTA update as Toyota vehicles can't do OTA (around 6:30 min into the video).  Instead, a person must take the vehicle to a dealership service center.

Maybe Mr Toyota hasn't heard about OTA updates yet since he totally concentrating on all his "just around corner" advances in technology like a Toyota solid state battery, hydrogen-powered cars, and their double-secret Toyota warp drive with 0-100kph acceleration in under a second.   And their warp drive models will come with free Star Wars floor mats (these mats are expected to be released in 2028....just around the corner).

Yeah, they are just finalising some legal procedures so they can teleport the mats to your vehicle !!

Coming to Thailand in 2025....Mazda just may have a winner here.  Has standard (530km NEDC) and long range (600km NEDC) models.  The specs below are China/European market specs and will have to wait and see the Thailand version(s) specs, price, etc.   Very nice looking exterior IMO.

Seems like a good move from Mazda, teaming up with Changan will certainly bring them up to speed quickly.

I like Mazdas despite only owning one ( a 323F back in the early 80’s ), but did look at Mazda 3 here in LOS in both the hatchback and sedan versions, I do like the Mazda red colour !!

If you haven't bought your BYD Seal AWD Performance yet, you might want to get your skates on.

Below is from the article.  Guess it means there will be a setting(s) for "faster than 5 sec" which would be manually selected after starting, but when turning off the car it resets to the default of no faster than 5 sec setting.  Start the car again...change setting to faster than 5 sec...repeat...repeat....etc.

If approved for China that does not mean it would be mandatory in other countries, but since Thailand sometimes acts like a provisional province of China then Thailand might think it's a good idea.

Editor’s comment

This new regulation is not intended to completely restrict cars from achieving a 0-100 km/h acceleration time under 5 seconds. Rather, it states that the default acceleration time when the vehicle is started cannot exceed five seconds, meaning users can achieve faster acceleration times through additional operations.

Maybe. But if they don't adjust their thinking about price and warranty, they will be low volume. And in  coming years, only high volume brands will be profitable.

At least, they have gone with their own design language making the 6e unmistakably Mazda unlike other Japanese brands like Toyota who are just re-badging their Chinese partner's vehicles.

And Mazda have also done a deal with CATL for future models so they may well see the writing on the wall and head in the right direction.

China’s Ministry of Public Security has responded to widespread online debate after a clause in a draft national vehicle safety standard was interpreted by some readers as prohibiting fast acceleration in new-energy vehicles. The ministry clarified that the draft does not restrict sub-five-second 0–100 km/h acceleration capabilities and that the discussion arose from a misunderstanding of the draft’s wording, as reported by IT-Home.

Looks stunning!

However, there is no way it will be priced like the Chinese brands. maybe less Toyota-stupid, and it might sell some.

Should at least have more power. It doesnt feel enough for their top tier sedan. 280-320HP would be better.
