Electric Vehicles in Thailand

A little bit off-topic but for all those promotions, that could be seen at Motor Show this week, when you are interested, do you have to pay anything there directly ? Or just give your information and contact your local dealer later ? Can you change your mind later ?

Essentially, what you are asking comes under contract law.

Because there are so many vendors, it's impossible to to say if every vendor has the same arrangements.

So the best idea is the KISS principle.

If you sign a contract and leave a deposit, you are basically locked into the contract, same as any other - normal cancellation provisions apply.

To be clear, this is the key part of the process for both you and any vendor. It's pressing the GO button.

If you don't pay a deposit, you are not in the queue for a future delivery in cases where there is a wait.

Simple.

And below is the BYD Motor Show promotion "just before above the price cut." Below snapshot is from a local BYD dealership website which hasn't updated to the latest promotion yet. Once again, I expect folks who bought the M6 over the last 6 weeks or so are now PO'ed.

Strange days in Pattaya.

I went to look at the Deepal S05 but the Deepal showroom has closed. Then I went to look at the ZEEKR X but the ZEEKR showroom has closed.

Other brands are not the same. There is a new Omoda/Jaecoo showroom (I think it its occupying the old Deepal showroom), a new (second) BYD showroom and a new Tank showroom.

BYD started selling EVs in Thailand in 2022...the Atto 3 model. Now in early 2026 they are selling the 11 models shown below in Thailand...3 hybrid models (the DM-i models) and 8 BEV (100% electric) models. Oh, how times have changed.

I'd love to go to the Motor Show. I went to the one in Nov 2024 and enjoyed it. But I was staying on lower Sukhumvit near my dentist I had an appointment with and the BTS/MRT/Mini Bus to the show was 2.5 hours there and same again back. I vowed, never again! So off to Sri Racha we'll go.

I'm glad to hear about the seats on the X. The new design looks the biz.

My girlfriend would like to make a statement/gain face. So the bigger and more luxurious the car the better. I live in Pattaya with small Sois so smaller cars suit me fine - she doesn't care about small sois, only about big face 555. We both see the others point of view but we'll never change the view of the other.

You make a reservation and pay a deposit in order to get the discounted price for the first owners. Some vendors even give lifetime warranty if ordered at the show.

Two times I changed my mind after a test drive and I got my deposit back. At one instance I ordered at the dealer after a test drive. One week later I changed my mind. I found out the Chinese OEM was losing a lot of money. I agreed to forego the deposit.

While waiting on the wife to turn her grey hair into black hair at a beauty shop I went to a nearby BYD dealership to kill time and take a brief look at the BYD Atto 1 and 2.

Based on just a few minutes of looking at and setting in each model I was impressed with the Atto 2. It looks good inside and out. And feels pretty roomy.

Now the Atto 1 was too small for my liking.

We saw the Atto 1 and 2 today in Central Mall.

The Atto 1 is too small, the Atto 2 is very impressive.

The specs of the Atto 2 are not very impressive for a car launching mid-2026.

(82 kW DC charging, torsion beam rear suspension)

The new MG 4 beats it on both counts for a similar price, and comes with a transferrable lifetime warranty.

No doubt some of the MG4 hatchback technical specs are better, but the Atto 2 SUV interior and exterior appearance will surely win many people over as a vehicle's "first impression" interior and exterior-wise are the biggest factors in whether a person ends up liking a vehicle or not. I liked the Atto 2 interior and exterior when I gave it a few minutes look-over today at a BYD dealership....the interior size really surprised me and very nice seats. Below is how AI feels about an Atto 2 and MG4 comparison.

Agree, MG really needs to work on their interiors. Keeps costs down, but the lack of choices is a bit disappointing.

Just to get a feel of how well (or bad) the Atto 2 may sell in Thailand below is how well it sold in Malaysia in 2025.....it was the 6th best selling EV.

should be noted that the Atto2 was only launched in Malaysia on 24 July 2025 where the BYD Sealion 7 was launched in Malaysia on 14 November 2024

Just to get a feel how well (or bad) the Atto 2 may sell in Thailand below is EV registrations for "Feb 2026 in Malaysia."

Only 20 Atto 2's were sold....maybe Atto 2 sales are fizzling-out after its launch 7 months earlier in late Jul 2025. But February is probably a slow sales month each year like how it's slow in China, Thailand, etc., around the Chinese New Year....just a slow selling period based on recent years. Additionally, only one month of stats is just a brief snapshot in time.

Full on day yesterday as I did the solar and storage show

https://aseannow.com/topic/1386815-smart-energy-energy-storage-expo-2026-at-impact/

and then walked across IMPACT to the motorshow. I certainly got my steps in

20260325_195908.jpg

I am not really in the market for a new car, but the wife seems to think that our BYD M6 isn't HiSo enough to take the monkey to private school even after I put matching private plates with her name "กบ" on both our cars.

20250127_150144.jpg

I agreed to look a big SUVs and Vans but nothing over ฿2m and there wasn't much to see really.

Tesla was there and that's the first time I've seen them at a motorshow in Thailand. I saw the Tesla sign in the distance but didn't bother going over. I was a real Tesla fan boy last decade, but how things have changed.

Denza D9, ฿2.7m or ฿2.15m

I did find a fully electric van for ฿1.3m but the wife didn't think that the brand name Farzon would impress.

I should add one more thing about the motor show - way to many PHEVs.

They probably thoughts that a PHEV was a gateway drug to a full EV, but where are they going to fill them up now?

BEV range 600km

PHEV range 100km and dragging that ICE along for the ride will do nothing for efficiency.

PHEV is outdated and inefficent. Everyone knows that. Even the manufacturers. They're just trying to get rid of their stock

To be fair, every segment has an optimum use case scenario and PHEV's have theirs, at least for the moment.

People that live in the city and have occasional use or a short commute report going months without filling the tank and have zero anxiety relating to range.

There are a lot of fuel stations where petrol is available but diesel is not so most would still be feeling comfy.

Many people see PHEV as best of both worlds, I think it’s worst of both. And I have one.

For those that don't know I tried to buy an MGZS EV back in 2019, but MG wouldn't sell it to me as my house ran on solar and the charger install company said it wouldn't work.

Eventually I was able to buy a PHEV only after contacting the MD of MG Thailand.

It had only 70km of full EV range so if we weren't driving it then we were charging it. It had a 3kW maximum charge speed AC only - no DC.

I now have 2 full EVs and don't miss it one bit.

The neighbour who bought it off us loves it as she charges it overnight from PEA and the 70km range easily covers her daily work commute at a far cheaper price than her old ICE car

Probably a long shot but maybe some new badges on the M6 would satisfy the wife? 😃

For those of you who already owns a Jaecoo or Omoda EV, the lifetime warranty for the battery, motor & power electronics may also apply to you.

Please hurry to register, because you have time till 5th April [ last day of Motor show ].

Here is the form to register: https://forms.gle/16KaXS21PTgdvKmT8

You can scan the attached QR code.

For more details, please check the facebook post, published by O&J Thailand: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1CKQmfrhxx/

I have spoken to one of the sellers of O&J Hua Hin. She recommends to return the car as much as possible in it's original state, before inspection is scheduled. For example, the very short outlet of AC condensed water of the Jaecoo 5. If you made a hose extension, remove it, because the AC system is essential for cooling of the battery. The same applies to protection covers for battery valves etc.

As translated by Gemini:

Criteria and Conditions for the Lifetime Warranty Package

1. Ownership Rights (Sittikan Khrop-khlong)

  • The vehicle must be held by the First Owner only.

  • In the case of a transfer of ownership, it must remain within the immediate bloodline (Father, Mother, Children, Spouse).

  • Transfers to a company name are permitted only if the original owner is the registered owner from the date of purchase.

2. Usage Mileage (Rayathang Kan Chay-ngan)

  • The average usage must not exceed 50,000 kilometers per year.

3. Maintenance History (Prawat Kan Bamrung Raksa)

  • The vehicle must have a service history that meets the manufacturer's standards.

  • If the vehicle is less than 1 year old or has under 20,000 km: A prior service history is not strictly required.

  • If the vehicle is older than 1 year or has over 20,000 km: It must have a documented maintenance history according to the standard schedule.

4. Vehicle Modifications (Kan Dat-plaeng Sap-rot)

  • The vehicle must not have undergone any modifications that affect the core systems of the car.

  • Crucially: This specifically applies to the electrical system, such as installing a new sound system or cutting/splicing any wiring.

I have the same problem with my eldest daughter, she has the MG4 and wants a Mercedes. I think I may have spoiled her in raising her.

It's in the shop today with a check airbag light on constantly.
