This happened to my old girl friend years ago. Her daughter entered a wrong number on atm and someone else got the money. This person was honest and the girl friend got her money back,

In my home country you cannot force anyone to pay back wrongly transferred money: it is on you to fill in the correct account number. Sure you can sue someone over it, but is there anything that makes the receiver legally obliged to return the money here?

Which is your country that allows the receiver of erroneous bank transfers to keep the money and not be forced to repay it? It isn't the UK or the US.    This should be good...

Deliberately refusing to return funds that are known to be not yours, but mistakenly sent to your account, is called theft or bank fraud.   Why do you think that the police have been involved?

Simple 45 yrs ago,before the advent of computerised banking,45 years ago you would probably have been nicked immediately for fraud/theft if you had signed a withdrawal slip for any amount that was over the original balance prior to the incorrect deposit being made.

Electronic Banking makes it easier on scallywags to fall into temptation to use funds that don't belong to them.

The point was that a poster had said that the person sending the money should have known, when the name associated with the account came up, that this was the wrong person. I was pointing out that since most Thais only know other people's nicknames, seeing the full, official name of a person on the account wouldn't help them to know if they have the right person or not.

There is no other option that to alert the bank, and make them aware of the mistake, if the funds are sent to you by mistake. I am not fond of banks, and would think nothing of taking them for a ride, if I thought I could get away with it! It would have to be a clandestine act, and very carefully planned.

 

But, how are you going to get away with something as foolish as this? It is so open and notorious, and now the police are on alert, nationwide. Dumb and dumber.

Why didn't you ask? When introduced to people I have always asked, and that goes for anyone not just Thai. I have known a 'Jack' and 'Bob' etc. whose real first names were Horace, Raymond etc..

Also some accounts have the name in English.  So even if they read Thai they may not read English.
