For instance I have a 31 year-old niece that I've known since she was born and I only found out her real name last month, when it happened to come up in conversation.

I don't quite see the connection here...

you can't send money to a nic-name?

I topped up my prepay sim at one of them kiosks. Put at 6 at the end instead of a 9 for my number - and pressed enter. Still hurts thinking about it now.

Somehow I doubt that you topped up your SIM with 300,000 baht.......but if you did, that person is still on a free call ????????????

THis happened to me about 45 years ago - I was 18 at the time.  A total of 5000 UK pounds was paid into my account - that's about 200,000 baht these days but I reckon it would be nearer a million baht these days.   I immediately informed the bank.  Pretty simple really.

Simple 45 yrs ago, before the advent of computerised banking,45 years ago you would probably have been nicked immediately for fraud/theft if you had signed a withdrawal slip for any amount that was over the original balance prior to the incorrect deposit being made.

Electronic Banking makes it easier on scallywags to fall into temptation to use funds that don't belong to them.

The point was that a poster had said that the person sending the money should have known, when the name associated with the account came up, that this was the wrong person. I was pointing out that since most Thais only know other people's nicknames, seeing the full, official name of a person on the account wouldn't help them to know if they have the right person or not.

There is no other option that to alert the bank, and make them aware of the mistake, if the funds are sent to you by mistake. I am not fond of banks, and would think nothing of taking them for a ride, if I thought I could get away with it! It would have to be a clandestine act, and very carefully planned.

But, how are you going to get away with something as foolish as this? It is so open and notorious, and now the police are on alert, nationwide. Dumb and dumber.

Properly invested in equities over 45 years that £5k would likely be a six figure sum funding a much more comfortable retirement for you now. Hope that’s cheered you up…. ? ????

Many Thais only know each other by their respective nicknames (ชื่อเล่น) and never actually know the person's real, full name.

I have several relatives whose real names I've never found out and others I've only found out (usually by accident) after decades of knowing them.

For instance I have a 31 year-old niece that I've known since she was born and I only found out her real name last month, when it happened to come up in conversation.

Why didn't you ask? When introduced to people I have always asked, and that goes for anyone not just Thai. I have known a 'Jack' and 'Bob' etc. whose real first names were Horace, Raymond etc..

The app clearly states the name of the account holder, prior to transfer

you are assuming she can read but probably can't

Also some accounts have the name in English.  So even if they read Thai they may not read English.
