Certificate of residence at Chiang Mai immigration, report

If I remember correctly, the last time I went to get a certificate of residence I had to come one day, they wanted 500 Baht from me, and I had to come back the next day to pick it up.

Since then the process has changed, I requested a certificate of residence today.

What hasn't changed is the application window, you have to apply Monday to Friday before 11:59am.

But now they only ask for 40 Baht for postal fee and they will send me the certificate of residence to my home. I will have to wait 18 days for it though. The person at the counter was friendly and effective, I was in and out in 2 minutes.

I got the EMS tracking number on the spot, so in case it shouldn't arrive I can trace it.

Required documents:

- Passport copies

- Copy of TM30

- A picture of me

That is a big improvement.

The last time I needed to do this, I had to wait 28 days and collect in person. However the staff at the counter pointed me at and agent who was guaranteed to get it for me for a fee of 1000Baht.

Get a yellow house book, as is your legal right, and you never need to get one of those again as long as you live.

My guess is that the 30-day wait in the past is to entice people to pay 500 baht to 'some people inside' to speed things up.

It absolutely doesn't make sense to take so long just to type in some info on the residence cert which can just take 5-10 minutes.

Waiting just 10 days for the delivery is a big improvement.

You need it to get/extend a driving license, or register a vehicle in your name, unless you have another document (yellow house book / work permit / embassy letter) to prove your address.

Many thanks, much appreciated.

I just had to get one to open a bank account.

Same thing a few years ago to open at another bank.
