Cannabis in food and for use in Thailand sees brisk sales following decriminalisation

Cannabis has suddenly become a fad among many Thai eateries, which are openly offering food and drinks containing cannabis after the plant, as well as hemp, were removed from the illegal narcotics yesterday (Thursday).

 

Numerous shops are selling cannabis and smoking accessories, with the plants, which used to be grown secretly in the back gardens, now being cultivated and sold openly.

 

A Nonthaburi food shop, which is in a converted cargo container, now offers hamburger with cannabis cheese and fried chicken topped with fried shredded cannabis leaves. The owner said that leaves are also used in the chicken marinade, as seasoning.

 

A housewife in the north-eastern province of Buri Ram told Thai PBS that she secretly planted cannabis in her back garden and uses the leaves in food or boiled as a drink to help her sleep well.

Thailand has delisted the cannabis plant and flowers from the narcotics list. Currently consumption, possession, cultivation, and sales of cannabis (roots, stems, leaves, flowers) that is not extraction is LEGAL!

 

But please use it responsibly and safely:

- Do not use in public as you can get in trouble for being a public nuisance carrying up to THB 25,000 fine and up to 3 month prison time.

- Do not use and then drive or operate heavy machinery, your license and be cancelled.

- Do not allow those under the age of 20 acess to cannabis.

- Do not mix cannabis and other substances such as tobacco or alcohol.

- Beware of high THC cannabis flowers as currently there is no regulations on the amount.

- Edible is still not allowed for sale without going through the FDA

Oh…it’ll be a money maker for sure.  Get ready for a massive drive for urine tests at checkpoints for anybody (especially deep pocketed foreigners) who might be out riding a motorbike or driving a car.   You’ll pop even if you’re sober.

They can’t test the level of THC. And nobody will care to test you for THC.

But don’t smoke and drive and have an accident. That will be DUI.

 

What they have done is left a loophole in the law and cops and courts will not touch it. They have been told not to touch it. 
 

 Next is to tax Cannabis, but that’s the next phase. ????

There multiple test kits which CAN test the THC level for dry flower example:

 

As for testing urine this is possible as well



That being said there are currently no limits on flower, as long as you do not extract it to make a concentrate. There also is no law on how much you can have in your body.

The intention of the legalization was for medicinal use, and as multiple sources have stated not recreational use. (there are many medicinal reasons why someone would use cannabis).

It appears that I now have to eat crow (never tasted crow before, I imagine it tastes like pigeon meat) and that all cannabis, which I have heard tell is up to 28-30 percent THC with some of the latest strains, is legal. I don't understand all the articles we had on ASEAN-Thai, or whatever this forum is called now, about  "cannabis" that is over 0.02% would remain illegal. Just two days ago or so there was an article saying that cannabis "except for psychoactive substances" would be legal. What is the explanation for that, and for all of the brou haha about cannabis being required to be lower that 0.02%? Are the articles presented on this site that badly translated, or are they simply redacted heavily by someone who personally doesn't want "cannabis" to be legal? Whats the deal?

 

Seems you'll have to wait and see till all the smoke clears if you want to smoke, grow your own etc, so I'm glad I don't enjoy smoking cannabis, though my dad used to grow it and smoke it when I was growing up in the 70's and I smoked a few times a week from the time i was 16 til I was 24. So it is all still interesting to me though I don't like pot now.  If I were a smoker I would really hate to have to sit on the fence and wait for things to pan out.  I can imagine in some provinces they may continue prosecuting people. I also  still find it hard to believe there isn't some catch. I'm sorry but I have to say, the reporting on this whole issue has been done rather poorly over the last 5 months or so.

 

What about growing cannabis? Though I don't smoke I do like raising all kinds of interesting plants and cannabis grown well is a highly charismatic plant, with it s aromas and large bushy clumps of flowers. You'd think you'd incur the wrath of your community just by creating large amounts of envy and get into trouble that way. So,  I am not about to run out and plant it, though now is the time I believe, you want to have your plants of a decent size when the photo-period is such that it induces flowering in the late fall/winter. But you also do not want to plant auto-flowering varieties just yet because rainy season is here and your buds will likely succumb to rot. I really don't know what I am talking about, it is just what I remember friends who were ganja farmers back in the day saying.

 

Most foreigners could grow better cannabis than most of the locals, growing good cannabis requires a lot of attention that few Thais are willing to commit to. It also needs to be cured properly or it ends up being unpleasant to smoke. We'll no doubt be inundated by loads of cheap head-ache inducing, seed permeated moldy stale brown stuff. But, Thai cannabis strains are world famous of course, Thai stick was a prized form of ganja when I was a kid, so it would not be too hard to get ahold of some good genetics, so growing your own would be the thing. Seems too good to be true. Failing being able to locate good seeds you could order seeds but I suppose there's some kind of ban on that. I guess we'll all have to hold our inhalations for awile and see what happens next.

The press release is just a publicity thing to attract tourists and eventually generate tax revenue . It was on the main news bulletins here in Ireland so  presume the word was sent out to the international press and TV. 

I was in Thailand for a month up to this week and apart from a coffee stall selling cannabis coffee I didn't notice any great interest ..

Yeah right. Ganja has been a staple of thai life longer than i can remember. 90 percent of the people that will drive stoned already are. The 10 percent that haven't are still looking for their keys.

Ever been to AMS in high summer? Not my kind of party but that's the crowd we can expect to come here. With alcohol, not all tokers are mellow. If you grow quality, local teenagers will definitely harvest it for you!

 

There are laws against smoking indoors, that would include pot. Used to sit in an upstairs room overlooking Patpong having a toke with the girls, before yaba. Lot of fun.
