That is just way, way too long especially since the Thai govt had already endorsed issue of the LTR visa during the LTR application process....and I expect the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was one of the govt agencies involved in reviewing your LTR application.   The NYC Consulate (and maybe the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) seem to be a slow-moving organization.

Is anybody here on a LTR Highly Skilled Professional visa through a foreign employer, and if so, can they comment on the income tax situation? The BOI material suggests a 17% income tax for Thai income, but what if that income is paid by a foreign employer to a foreign account and never remitted to Thailand? Is there still a Thai tax liability? If so, it seems like one would be better off financially to be on the DTV, no? As far as I know, DTV holders are treated like normal Thai tax residents and not expected to pay tax on unremitted foreign income?

Highly skilled professional is for someone employed inside of Thailand by a Thai company.  They would have a work permit and be working in Thailand and paying Thai income taxes on their Thai sourced income.

The situation you explain sounds like it would fall under the "Work from Thailand Professional" which is tax exempt from foreign income in Thailand.

I wonder if I have been misled by a hallucinating large language model. Question posed to GPT-5 mini:

Can one apply for a LTR Highly Skilled Professional visa on the basis of employment with a foreign company outside Thailand, for work to be done in Thailand?

And response from the LLM:

Short answer: Yes — under Thailand’s Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa for Highly Skilled Professionals you can qualify based on employment with a foreign (non‑Thai) company if the work to be performed is physically in Thailand and you meet the LTR eligibility requirements (minimum salary, qualifications/experience, and other criteria).

But when pressed to link an actual report of someone in that situation the LLM waffles and is unable to do so.

The HSP LTR flavour does not have the same high bar for company size/revenue that the WP flavour has, so I had been wondering if it may be an option for people working for smaller foreign employers in the right industries. Seems like the answer is no, and the DTV is the go.

Took me a few prompts ...  ironically they approved on the last day my BOI letter was dated (approved to).    Maybe they are just very busy 😉

Transfer of existing LTR visa stamps at TIESC from old to new passport after a visit to my home country was smooth. The clerk at the LTR lounge at TIESC took my docs, checked everything and told me she wold call me once all is completed which took around two hours that I've spent in the very pleasant shopping mall. But it's very important to  keep in mind to a) get your new passport BEFORE the old one expires (with its visa stamp in it…) and b) make you sure you enter the Kingdom on your (still valid) LTR visa stamp carrying both passports old and new as entering on visa exemption (or any other visa) will inevitably invalidate your LTR visa. The immigration officers at BKK airport might have to consult their supervisors as they are not necessarily familiar with this procedure. In my case I did a carry a letter in Thai describing the procedure politely asking the immigration official to follow it. She did have to consult with two supervisors even at the fast track entry at Subvarnabhumi airport but all very politely and done within 10 minutes or so.

Interesting.

Would you mind sharing the letter in thai describing the procedure ?

Did you make an appointment before going to TIESC, by phone or mail ?

Just got LTR visa stamp this morning. Here the timeline for reference:
  • 7 October 2025: applied on the LTR website
  • 10 October 2025: I was requested additional documents (had to go to Department of Land to request for title deed and purchase contract within 60 days and uploaded on 13 October)
  • 15 October 2025: I was requested to show Health Insurance (bought and uploaded from AXA Thailand on the same day)
  • 27 October 2025 Visa was endorsed (uploaded required docs on the same day)
  • 28 October 2025: got an email about my previous Visa being still on the old Passport and need to transfer it to the new Passport (went the CW immigration on 30 October to transfer the stamp and uploaded updated passport on the same day)
  • 3 November 2025: got notification to book for Appointment at TIESC
  • 5 November 2025: arrived about 20mins before my appointment, checked documents at the LTR counter and completed the process in less than 1 hour (less than 40mins into my appointment time)

Congrats! Thanks for the report. Now you can relax for the next 5 years. No more annual renewals or 90-day reports. And, if you leave the country, your 1-year reporting clock resets when you re-enter. Best of luck to you.

  1. Company signatory – Should the person signing be listed as “Director” or “Authorized Representative” (as per company registration)?

  2. Income section – Does “current income” and “income for previous year” refer to my personal income or the company’s? (if it is a new company leave blank?)

Hi Jack, I've submitted the WP46 for LTR linked digital work permits. Company signatory was an executor director of the company (in this case me). The income section is for the company's finances.  Thai employee numbers - in the case you mention it sounds like this would be zero if there aren't any. Education documents - pretty sure this is for the person applying for the WP, in this case it would be your wife's education documents. Work permit number - leave blank initially. Company shareholders - does the company have a Foreign certificate or US-Thai Amity treaty approval? If not, my guess would be the shareholders should be majority Thai.

For a law firm that can help, the LTR site lists a number of "certified agencies" that help with the LTR visa itself, and some are law firms.  See this link:

If your LTR expires in 2034, then your permission to stay must (I assume) clearly state a permission to stay until 2029 ! NOT 2034 ... and IMHO THAT year 2029 permission to stay date,  is THE year/date they should be looking at, Not at the year 2034 date of the LTR visa expiry.

I have an LTR too. Got it recently - first 5 years expire in 2030. But my PP expires just 1.5 years after that. Will they (BOI and IO) enter the 2nd five years in the same passport, given it has less than 2 years remaining? Or will they issue it to the last day of the current PP and tell me to come back once I have a new PP and they can add the full five years?

You'll only get until the expiration of your passport and have to go pickup the remaining time after your new passport.

If you get a chance, give the LTR unit a call about the WP46 and check with them about your questions. That unit was so helpful to me when I was applying. Also, my WP46 form went through a couple of updates as the form was processed through the section of the Labor Dept that works with the LTR unit, so you may find that you submit the form, and then the LTR unit may ask for some changes or updates later.

Getting a Kasikorn account - a bit of difficulty

I have a Bangkok Bank account. I've had no problems with that account but considering the current banking issues I thought getting a second bank account would be a good idea.

I went to the Kasikorn branch in Siam Paragon mall, Bangkok. I went to the desk that said new accounts for foreigners. I gave the lady my passport. She looked at my LTR visa and then started looking at what must be a list of foreigner visas. She then called someone. I talked to the lady on the phone. She asked if my visa was a non-immigrant visa. I said that I don't think it is classified as a non-immigrant visa. She then told me that they cannot open an account for any foreigner that is not on a non-immigrant visa. I asked even a 10 year LTR? She repeated the no account without a non-immigrant visa. I chose not to argue.

Went to the LTR office in One Bangkok. He confirmed that the LTR is not a non-immigrant visa. It is a "special" visa. He then suggested using the Kasikorn branch in One Bangkok, which I did. The lady in One Bangkok also looked through a list of visas and then said I could open an account. It took about 30 minutes and now I have a Kasikorn account.

I'm not sure if the lady in Paragon just didn't see it or if it wasn't on her list. However, the lady on the phone was very definite, in fluent English, about no accounts for anyone not on a non-immigrant visa. I don't think there is anything to conclude from this other than different branches -> different results . . . which should not be news to anyone. I was just a little surprised . . .

By the way . . . Chat GPT will tell you that a pensioner LTR is a non-immigrant visa. It is just wrong. It said it is in the BOI documents; It is probably just making this up.

The BoI website is clear that when on LTR visa, to open a bank account, in addition to one's passport, one also need to Bring the BoI "Notification of qualification for endorsement for Long-Term Resident Visa".

Some months back I went to open an account at SCB bank, and I was surprised they asked for that  BoI "Notification of qualification for endorsement for Long-Term Resident Visa". ! Fortunately I had an electronic copy of such on my smartphone.

I also recall in the May-2023 timeframe, when I first received my endorsement for my LTR-WP, where my Thia wife was chatting with a high-school friend, where this friend was a bank manager at a local Krungsri bank branch, and this friend noted they had only just received (from the head office) authorization to open bank accounts for foreigners on an LTR-visa.  Further the friend (who is also friends with bank managers of a few different Thai banks) that none of those bank branches had yet been authorized (from their Bangkok based HQ) to open accounts of people on LTR visas.  Of course that was 2.5 years ago. Things have changed.

Still, a BoI "Notification of qualification for endorsement for Long-Term Resident Visa" is nominally required to open a Bank account.

Here is what the BoI webpage has to say:

https://ltr.boi.go.th/page/opening-bank-account-in-thailand.html

I read that too on the BOI LTR website as I was on my way to One Bangkok.  Neither branch asked for it. The Paragon branch didn't seem to know what an LTR was so why would they ask for it?  Plus if it at all indicated that the LTR was not a non-immigrant visa then at least the lady on the phone would have refused to open the account. The One Bangkok branch knew about LTR's.

I got my pensioner LTR in January 2023. When I opened my Bangkok Bank account in Kantharalak, Sisaket province late last year they were excited to see my LTR. They had never seen one before.

All I needed for today's Kasikorn account was my passport with the visa and my condo lease/TM30. They copied my Thai drivers license as well. Of course, be prepared for any request when doing this.

Did you need any other documents apart from your passport with the visa for opening the account?

They asked for a residency certificate. I gave them my current (new) condo lease agreement and my TM30. They asked for another US ID not knowing that I had been living in Thailand 8 years. They accepted my Thai drivers license.

Open Kasikorn account, in the Suk. Soi 6 branch, in May, no hesitation what so ever... The lady there wanted only my passport and yellow book.

Like I suggested - different branches -> different results. Not everyone has seen an LTR before.

When I first got my LTR I went up to the Sisaket Immigration office and they had never seen one before either.

I think that's back when it was all over the news, so people would have been more aware of it.  But the headlines in Thailand move on fast, so people have long forgotten about it.

Last December took me a good 10 minutes at Nong Khai for the officer to finish stamping me in after going back and forth through my passport about 20 times.

Then in January of this year, the DLT in Chiang Rai took my passport to someone's office and made me wait an hour while they decided if I would get a 2 year or 5 year renewal (I got a 5-year license, but only after asking what was taking so long).

At the five year juncture, we with LTR visas have to go to BoI at One Bangkok mall in Bangkok to get another five year LTR visa stamp in our passport. For those of us not living in Bangkok, this can be a many mile journey, requiring overnight accommodations. Being in my 80's, I don't really like traveling -- but I know I can't get an agent for this five year renewal requirement. So, assuming I'm healthy enough -- in a couple of years, off to BoI in Bangkok.

Why not put this on my bucket list?  I've always wanted to stay at the Oriental Hotel -- and I see it's only 3-5 Kms from One Bangkok -- so no cross town traffic to fight for the five year renewal, which would be the case if I stayed at the long-across-town Four Seasons. Only eye popper is -- $950 per night. But, so what? There's no way I'll outlive my investments, so why not treat myself, and wife, to a good time.

Anyway, just putting some thoughts out there for us out-of-towners. Another option is the new Ritz Carlton -- located at One Bangkok -- thus no traffic at all to consider. Five stars, with nice reviews. Might as well make this five year renewal as pleasurable as possible. But, for me, since I've already mentioned this to the wife -- I'm already locked into the Oriental. C'est la vie.

I think it applies to all on the LTR no matter if one applied within Thailand or outside of Thailand. IMHO.

As to whether a 5-year re-proof of the finances (for a new 5 year permission to stay stamp or letter) can be done outside of Thailand, that could be a good question to ask BoI.  I don't believe BoI have expounded yet on what is actually possible.

I'm about 98% certain they don't have such policies and requirements even drafted yet.  Would be great if we could have gotten it at initial approval, and even better if we could get it well before the first person is due!

But I'm expecting it about a week before the first person will be eligible to apply, per normal Thai immigration items.  Anyone remember the covid extensions, when they would not announce the next until AFTER the previous deadline expired?  That happened many times, but the times they announced it early, it was only 1-2 days early.
