Thai Rath published a sad picture of a large beached whale being hauled away by backhoe before being buried in southern Thailand yesterday.

The 7.3 meter long, 2.5 ton male whale had beached on Long Beach, Koh Lanta.

Officials said that there are many whales in the Krabi area but this was the first one that had beached.

An initial examination by vets called in from Trang suggested there were no injuries on the body and that it had been dead for around three days with decomposition already set in.

A full autopsy is being carried out. The whale was buried in an area at the beach.

Ten officials from the Mu Koh Lanta National Park, navy safety personnel and fishermen had arrived earlier and contacted vets.

The media said that no cause of death was yet determined in what was a first for Krabi.

That'll be nice when it warms up.
