Country faces a ‘constitutional crisis’ says Move Forward Party MP in parliament over PM’s status

The anticipated floundering of key electoral reform bills by Monday, August 15th is also a matter expected to be ultimately adjudicated by the Constitutional Court as the ballot system used in the next General Election will sway its outcome with the changes proposed last September likely ultimately to hand a decisive win to the Pheu Thai Party which is currently riding high in national opinion polls, particularly in Bangkok.

 

The Thai parliament heard on Thursday from leading opposition Move Forward Party MP, Rangsiman Rome, that the kingdom was facing a constitutional crisis as questions swirl over the status of Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha after August 23rd next. Government spokesman, Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, urged the public to await the decision of the Constitutional Court on the matter. At the same time, a parliamentary meeting on Thursday failed to reach a quorum, as has been the case now for several days, a situation which could see urgent and critical legislation to change the country’s electoral laws flounder if they are not passed by Monday, August 15th.

 

The electoral system used in the next General Election will be the most important factor in determining the outcome with the changes proposed and passed by parliament, in a first reading last year, likely to give the country’s leading opposition party, Pheu Thai, an emphatic victory in the next poll due to be held between now and March 2023.

There is no question that Thailand is in a crisis. It would be more apt to call it the Prayuth crisis. Much of the problems, failures and economic woes can be laid at his feet. Blame covid all you want. Thailand was moving backwards long before the plague reared it's ugly head.

Just when they thought they had written a robust Constitution (Meechai's fourth, the country's 30th-ish) they get pulled back in.

Are these the same judges for whom the government built the controversial vacation homes on Doi Suthep?

Well, it's a crisis......for years already as it is not a democracy we would define. But who is backing the army? 

As long people have to kneel down like ants there will be not any slight significant change in Thai society.

A true existential crisis, and one has to wonder if Thailand will turn into a new style Myanmar Military dictatorship with no democracy.  Clinging to power is hard unless you create an existential crisis that see's you put military on the streets like China is doing now...Life in Thailand truly lacks meaning under this government......

Sadly, like everything else in this country the fools in government cannot write a clear constitution that tells citizens, how long is the tenure of the PM.

They cannot seem to communicate anything with clarity and precision.

THat would be a good idea, however I think they are hoping that the people will do that so they can make another coup and than we are again further in the sh....t. In Sri Lanka and Irak they chased everyone out of the Government house and that would be much better, but look what has happened in Myanmar...The Army will never give up their power. That can only be done as the people claim their country back.

I believe it was built for the Court of Appeals judges - still a conflict of interest as title was transferred directly to the Court of Appeals instead of the Thai Treasury (now title is with Treasury).

Surely the constitution should be well capable of handling any crisis so that any situation is covered and the wheels can continue turning.

Still leaving open the need for a solid discussion/reason as to why these people are entitled to expensive free land and house, all paid for by all Thais, rich, comfortable, poor and very poor.

Outrageous.
