The body of a man was found yesterday (Wednesday) in one of more than a dozen of 7-Eleven and Mini Big C convenience stores, gas stations and communication towers in the three southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, which were attacked by southern insurgents on Tuesday night.

Deputy Commander of the Fourth Army Region Maj-Gen Pramote Prom-in said yesterday that he believes the coordinated bomb attacks, selectively targeting convenience stores, were carried out by a single group of insurgents to undermine the economy of the Deep South, as the stores are economic symbols.

The charred body of the 21-year-old man was found inside a store, located in the compound of a PTT gas station in Su-Ngai Kolok district of Narathiwat province, during an inspection by a unit of explosive ordnance disposal officials. The remains were sent to a hospital for autopsy, before being handed over to his family for burial.

I bet TAT would "quake in it's shoes" if these Southern terrorists were to switch their activities to Bangkok and the popular seaside resorts.

These provinces are not historically or culturally Thai, they should have a local referendum, like the Scots did, to determine their future, and if the majority want Malay rule. So it be. Pride, Face, and Stupidity are very expensive indulgences to harbour.

It would be very difficult to stage a free and fair referendum in the southern provinces. There would be considerable pressure on voters from the separatists to vote one way, and the government to vote the other.

I suspect most are happy to remain part of Thailand but with the acceptance of Pattani-Malay (Jawi) as an official language, an end to Thaification, and recognition of their history and culture. Many would also want to see the implementation Sharia law, similar to Malaysia, where Sharia Courts deal with the Islamic laws relating to betrothal, marriage, inheritance, apostasy and divorce. Sharia law would not apply to non-Muslims.
