Weed is here, casinos next?

 

I never thought weed would be legal like it is now, this still continues to surprise me.

 

I don't think casino's will ever show up but who knows now.....

Having made cannabis legal has perhaps lessened the need for the money-laundering services of casinos.

 

Whether casino gambling comes to Thailand near term will probably depend upon whose support is needed to form the next government after elections next year.

Yes; the process is well advanced already. Pattaya will get one to start with, as will 4 other regions. Where, not when or if, is the question now. My guess is somewhere on 2nd Road between Klang and Central Marina. Plenty of vacant land; mostly owned by Chang's property arm; awaiting redevelopment.

The money involved will dwarf that of the cannabis trade.

This thread will probably be moved because it doesn't specify Pattaya as having a casino in the future.

 

In any case, it's not if, just when, for both Thailand in general, and Pattaya.

 

Social harm to Thai's has been cited by many as the main reason casinos will never be allowed in Thailand, however, Thailand could easily follow Vietnam's model and have locals provide proof of a minimum monthly salary in order to gain entry.

I am totally surprised they are not here already. My bet is on the large plot of vacant land opposite the Grande Caribbean on Thappraya Road. Beach access as well and room for a massive hotel/casino complex.

Not sure I would say they made it legal, they liberalized access and things sort of got out of hand...... they would likely want to put that genie back in the bottle but it has gone too far now. Might be a good thing.

Casinos, don't see any benefit unless it is limited access resort type places out of town.

     Yes, could be there or the big empty Chang plot in Pattaya.  The problem is inadequate roads, in my opinion--Thappraya and 2nd Road/Beach Road can be traffic-clogged even now with greatly reduced international tourists and not many tourist buses at the moment.   What's it going to be like when tourism gears back up and a casino is added to the mix?  A third option could be an out-of-town destination site that takes advantage of the new Motorway extension and the proposed high-speed rail.

I loved casino's in the 90's as A$5 minimum for blackjack. Now its like $20 a hand so if they do that (500 baht minimum) it's a no go for me. 100 baht per hand or spin would be good though

Past couple of decades have been mostly steady improvement in terms of foreign income from tourism, thus regardless of all the talk over the years about casinos, there has not been burning need to proceed from that perspective, rather more than enough work to keep infrastructure in match with tourism volumes.

 

Now, with the developments since 2020 with covid, the war, and consequent coming recession, situation is different and I also would be pretty suprprised if casinos would not come into the toolbox. Unrealistic to expect the decisionmakers to let that money to flow to neighboring countries who have the gambling places that attract asian gamblers.

 

I would guess those casinos would be for foreigners and maybe for rich thais, and local mass market gambling will stay underground as it has been to fund police and other goverment officials related to that.

Easy to still play on a AU$5 minimum blackjack table - online!

If they allow locals to gamble at all, it'll be a very bad thing for poor Thais.

 

I hope they won't allow any, but one in an isolated area along the Gulf coast far from a town might be OK. Build hotels specifically for casino as was done in Las Vegas.

I have admitted I am in Pattaya for the nightlife.  So?

 

I suppose you are going to say you are in Pattaya for the temples and the Thai culture, and of course, Pattaya's wonderful beach.  ????

Of course, will casinos be legal with time. How long time it takes, is very hard to say. what stands clear by looking all over the world, is that it´s a great income regarding taxes for the country.
