Wife wants to visit her pal in Buriram for a few days at the end of November/beginning of December. Google brings up flights via Don Muang, bus service (but no details for fares nor times) or train ( long journey via Bangkok).

Has any member made this journey and can share details and/or advice?

Both Nokair and AirAsia have flights from DMK to Buriram. You can book it as 1 ticket Chiang Mai DMK Buriram or as 2 separate tickets and save some money just checked and seems Nokair stop flying at the end of this month, and if making a 1 ticket with AirAsia it is a bad connection so better try different airlines to DMK that connect better with the AirAsia flight to Buriram

Nakonchai Air run a bus service from Buriram to CM.

Buriram has an airport as well and daily flights to and from Bangkok, not sure if there is a direct flight Buriram to CM. Nok Air and Air Asia run them.

Fly to Khon Kaen then catch bus.

IMO this would be the easiest, other than driving from Chiang Mai yourself. On arrival at KKC airport you will have to get a taxi to take you to the Bus Station on the south side of the city (off the ring road and route 2).

No direct flights from CNX.

The flight to Khon Kaen, then drive, is sensible.

I have driven a few times; interesting journey but 10/11 hours as I recall. Stopping off in Pitsanaluk and making it a two day journey is far more comfortable if you have to drive.

I can smell a Road Trip

If you do decide to drive, may I suggest this route which I was familiar with when living in North Thailand. It avoids the cities of Khon Kaen and Korat.

From Chiang Mai take route 11 via Lampang and Uttaradit to Phitsanulok (all by-passed). Join route 12 and head eastwards via Lomsak and the Nam Nao National Park to Chumphae. Turn right onto route 201 via Chaiyaphum to Sikhio where you meet route 2. Keep straight on under route 2 where route 201 becomes route 24. Eventually turn left onto route 218 for Buriram.

More than 800 km on the road!

Never for me, old man!

Not a second thought for me.

Morning flight to Don Mueang with AirAsia (8:30 or 10:00).

DMK to BFV with AirAsia at 12:35 (PM).

That's the only option with one flight that I would accept.

About 200 km on the road, 3 to 4 hours?

Nok bad?

Lot of old planes and not the best record regarding incidents (not necessarily fatal).

Last one: runway excursion in Chiang Rai in July this year. Blocked the airport for five days.
Good for a lot of posts here.

Some "interesting" stuff here:

(not all are NokAir's faults)

Doesn't your Wife know how to get from CM to Buriram ?

Like, its either by bus or flying and she can get all the bus info from the bus station

The VIP bus goes overnight from Burirum to CM and vice versa.

I think it's called Nakhon Air or something.

Comfortable, a/c and not too dear.

I know their website isn't very good, but it's not showing a CM to Buriram bus.  Is it the one to Ubon that perhaps stops off in Buriram or is there a point to point one that's missing from the website list?
