Siam Rath reported that Sairee beach in Chumphon, southern Thailand was covered in planks of various sizes. 

 

They came from four containers that had broken up just offshore.

 

At two other beaches in the area there were eight more containers floating.

 

The containers had been part of a consignment of 42 containers that were on a vessel called Santhat Samut 4 that capsized 8.6 nautical miles offshore.

 

The containers full of planks were being taken from Surat Thani to Lat Krabang.

 

Ten crew were rescued by national park staff in the area. 

 

The media said that as yet no one had stepped forward to sort out the mess.

Looks like some locals will be gathering planks to help remodel their homes.  Unless of course the police catch them and then they will be made to walk the Plank.

They look like teak.  A bit of salt water wouldn't hurt them, just dry them out and you've got tens of thousands of baht worth of wood!

Ah, those type of "planks", was going to say that there is no shortage of the other usage for that word.

It is not teak.  It is mai teng, and it is very resistant to marine enviroments and often used for bridge and pier work.

 

Those 6x1 inch by 1.5m planks in the foreground sell for about 320 baht each direct from my local lumber yard.  So there is hundreds of thousands of baht worth of timber there.  Perhaps millions.  Locals will be there soon to steal it all if it is not guarded.

There is the occasional large hardwood log floating up on the beach near my house.  The locals are always lightning fast to start cutting it up into usable lengths with a chain saw and then haul it away in their motorbike side cars.

 

The timber on that beach will dissapear in a heartbeat if no one is guarding it.  The containers will also be cut up and sold for scrap by the locals if they are allowed.

 

The line in the OP article about no one has come forward to clean up the mess is retarded.  Locals will clean it up for free.  And in a micro second if they are allowed to.

Yes indeed, my thought as well. I used teak planks when building my new house in the mountains of Northern Thailand many years ago.

Jeez! Thats the time you need a nice big double wheel trailer, or a 2 or 3 tonne truck. Nip down to the beach lickety-split n snag yourself a nice pile of dressed timber.

I smell a new pool deck on the horizon.

I doubt there using Teak wood to make transport containers.

 

Be nice though.  Nice looking planks in any case.
