Not an insect as the OP does not mention any legs.

I said that I had just finished reading it but I don't know the ending.

It was getting a bit scary on page 9 and I am not ready to read the other 2 pages.

I put the book in the freezer for now.

I think describing a grub or caterpillar of some type, not an insect (yet). The one that comes to mind is called a "mah-noi" by the locals here in Isan. (translates to "puppy"). You can find them eating your favorite plants and shrubs, they never eat stuff you don't like.
