Thaksin’s Homecoming Bid May Fall Through Without Help From Kingmaker

THE LONG-COVETED DESIGN OF de facto Pheu Thai Party boss Thaksin Shinawatra to return home after years in self-exile overseas alongside his sister Yingluck Shinawatra, both having been previously deposed as prime ministers in separate coups, may entirely fall through without help from kingmaker Prawit Wongsuwan.

 

Thaksin and Yingluck who have been reportedly residing in Dubai following the 2006 and 2014 coups which had overthrown them as head of an elected government respectively could not come back home after a general election expected early next year only if Prawit, top leader of the ruling Palang Pracharath Party and a deputy prime minister, did nothing to help make their shared dream come true, according to political observers.

 

Thaksin has time and again lamented the event in which he was deprived of power in the 2006 coup orchestrated by the likes of the then-army chief Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, followed by the 2014 coup orchestrated by the then-army chief Prayut Chan-o-cha to depose the woman prime minister. More often than not Thaksin has publicly repeated his much-heralded prediction of the Pheu Thai, a resurrection of the dissolved Thai Rak Thai Party and People’s Power Party, scoring a landslide victory in the nationwide election which could probably pave way for his planned homecoming so that, he said, he could literally babysit seven grandchildren.

I too am interested to know if there is a statute of limitations on any of the charges. Yingluck was charged with transferring an official. Compare with Boss killing a policeman.

I’m not a legal scholar, but doesn’t statute of limitations refer to chargeable crimes, not convictions? Thaksin was convicted so there’s no clock involved. Sentence would begin on his return unless some other intervention occurs.

He was illegally overthrown by a military coup who then became the judge and jury of what they had charged him with.

 

The same happened to his sister Yingluck.

There is little chance of that happening.  Remember that wanting to bring back brothr was one of the reasons that Yingluck got the boot.

 

There really is no reason for him or her to come back.  The family businesses are doing well and the money is flowing.  As a convicted criminal They can not run for government.

 

Thaksin is nothing more than a distraction.  

This country needs to move on from the old guard and bring in a new one.

Trumped up charges??? He did sell AIS for 2 billion dollars and didn't pay taxes on that by gifting it first to his housekeeper, who then in turn gifted the money to his children. 

 

He also ordered a government owned plot of land in Bangkok to be sold to his wife for 100 million, which was bought by the government just a few years earlier for two or three times the price, which was illegal because family members of politicians are not allowed to buy land from the government while their family member is an active politician! 

 

The guy who was responsible for the sale notified Thaksin and told him it is illegal and if he wants the sale to go through, he needs a signed letter from Thaksin, which he gave him. 

 

These are just two examples of many. 

 

He's as corrupt as they come and he needs to pay for it! He's a typical megalomaniac who though he could do whatever he wants and even go up against the king and he paid the price, only not in full, yet!

I'm not familiar with the current situation, therefore I can't speak on that. In my opinion he needs to stand trial for what he did regardless of what someone else did or didn't do!

Agree, in fact there's many young Thai folks who have good education, speak good english and have highly valuable experience form studying/living/working abroad. 

 

Khun Thanathorn is from an extremely wealthy successful familt. His personal values are strong small s socialism, a society taking taking care of itself, sharing, equality, equal opportunity.

 

His values and attidudes horrify Thailands hi-so folks and run enathema to the military history and desires for military rule. All of these folks hate him and hate his values.

 

Personally I believe he would be a very good turn arounf pm and there's plenty of folks in his party who have the same views and as a team could make major highly valuable changes to Thailand. But the military refuse to give him any chance, and take actions to ensure for no really good reasons he's sidelined, by trumped up charges etc. Sadly the loser is Thailand / all Thais. 

 

Also in the picture are numerous claims that he's a stooge for Thaksin and photos of him shaking hands with Thaksin and stories floated everywhere that he was a Thaksin supporter/proxy.Nothing could be further from the truth. 

 

Change is unfortunately and sadly not happening anytime soon.

He could and can come back anytime!

What Thaksin wants is to be above the law. People who are convicted criminals and who are convicted to go to jail must go to jail. That shouldn't be too difficult to understand.

 

And what kind of article is this that doesn't even mention above fact? He is a wanted criminal, and he doesn't want to server his time in jail, that is why he is not coming back.

So you know all about events of 14 years ago but nothing about the current Govt? Just to enlighten you, in Thailand staging a coup is illegal.
