Thaksin’s Daughter, Real Estate Tycoon ‘Unacceptable’ To Most Senators

FORMER PRIME MINISTER Thaksin Shinawatra’s daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, and real estate tycoon Settha Taweesin, both speculated to run for prime minister under the Pheu Thai tickets, would likely be found “unacceptable” to most senators even though either one could possibly be endorsed by a majority of MPs after the next general election, according to a source associated with military senators.

 

It would be unlikely for most of the 250 senators, all of whom had been handpicked by the 2014 coup junta under leadership of army chief-turned-premier Prayut Chan-o-cha, to cast a yea vote either for Paetongtarn or Settha as long as anti-Thaksin sentiment remains among the unelected lawmakers, said the source who only spoke on condition of anonymity today (Jan.11).

 

Despite possibilities of the Pheu Thai scoring a landslide victory for 250-plus MPs among a total of 500 in the nationwide election, plus additional backups from a few other contesting parties, the likes of Paetongtarn and Settha would be “unacceptable” to the anti-Thaksin senators, according to the source personally connected with military senators.

If fairness comes into the equation, Thaksin should be flown back to rule for a full term after all the shenanigans against him and his family, against the wishes of the Thai voters. Yes perhaps he was not Mr squeaky clean but neither were the clowns that followed him, the post Thaksin years have been the mother of all disappointments.

The Thaksin clan being the repeated people's choice is precisely why Prayuth created a new Constitution and a Senate chock full of mates on a reach-around.

if prawit goes in coalition with taksin parties, some senators, who don't like prayuth, will support such government.

After the last general elections people went to the streets and demanded reforms of all institutions, including senate.

Likely they will go again and with a stronger message. New generations are not taking it, the dinasaurs are dying.

There is a possibility, that elections will be deliberately postponed due to year of mourning

They are Thaksin's goons and that makes them unacceptable. It's not really that difficult.

goons are the army, and not democratically elected representatives having popular support for over 20 years.

Goons are also senate, because they were appointed by goons in uniform. Many of those senate goons are military, ex-military, police and yellow shirt tugs, who staged bangkok shutdown in 2014 and were involved since the 2006 coup in abolishing every single elected government since then and by every possible means.

 

Future is in future forward, which stands for deep constitutional reforms, including abolishing senate.

 

The democratic reform movement goes much further. 

If the coming election is fixed again, they will be in the streets in no time, like the last time.

And with more daring demands and with stronger support from masses, that including political parties. Including voters for pheu thai, which refrained from protesting the last time, under thaksin pressure, who himself is a royalist.

There are new pheu thai voters, urban, those who elected bangkok governor the last year.

 

The establishement realises it, that's why prawit is talking to thaksin.

 

Who is this source associated with senators? Why senators can't say it now directly?

When is the end of the senators ? These guys should really not have this power.

 

I am agaist Thaksin comming back without jail. Its rare that one of the big fish get caught for corruption and many other cases open. So when one does get caught it should stay that way. If none ever get caught then they too brazen in their thefts. I rather have Prayut also investigated and so on but better some then none.

The non elected senators doesn't represent the people. They should never be allowed to hold the country ransom to determine who should be the Prime Minister. The 2017 constitution should be re-writtened to reinstate the 1997 constitution for a fully elected Senate.

Fear and self censorship were the reasons. Harsh punishments for any form of dissent including preventing the general public from obtaining informed choice paved the way for the constitution to be get over the finish line in the referendum in a low turnout. .

I don't think you can blame either stupidity or apathy in this case.  The problem was that Thai people did not understand what they were reading and teh affects it could have.  

 

On paper, it sounded and read well.  The problem is that everything is built with loopholes in almost every country.

 

Most Thais get their news on either FB Twitter or Insta.  They are not knowledgeable enough to tell the <deleted> from the good.  Much like other countries, look at the U.S. and the "woke". Everything is the racist world there.  

It is not that people are stupid it is just that they do not know.

 

Here is where it gets interesting.

 

If the PT wins 250 seats in the house, then the Prime minister will be elected by the house and the other parties. Which would not be a bad thing.  The challenge s that someone has to win 376 votes,

 

Possible sceanario

 

PT wins 250 nominates Paetongtarn

PPRP wins 50 seats to nominate Prawit

UTN gets 25 seats and nominates Prayut.

FF gets 75 seats and nominates no one

100 seast of the mini parties no nominees

 

I think the people that are going to enjoy and win the next election are the ones that represents the minis parties like the Dems and such.  They are going to get sooooo thick of envelopes to support one or the other.

 

The other thing to note is that being military and Prawit or Prayut being military, it is going to take a lot bigger protest than usual because the last thing people are going to want is for the military to take over the country again.

 

The young people and the PT followers have learned.

If you remember Prayut said if you do not vote FOR this new constitution the Army will stay in power?  of course they voted to get rid of the Army but... nothing much changed they just put on civvies and carried on.

There is a simple solution and that is to develop a house based on the Canadian method where each person is elected by the riding constintuen=cy.  Each party has a leader of Party in this case Prayut, Paetongtarn or Prawit or Anutin.

 

The leader of the party with the most elected members if becomes PM with either a majority government or a minority.  There is not vote buying and all parties keep their own counsel.

 

The senate gets to sit back and do nothing.  The only vote in the house is for the position of speaker.

Thailand already had a solution which is the 1997 constitution. Drafted by popularly elected Constitutional Drafting Assembly. The military shredded that People's Constitution and put in place a hghly skewed constitution that seem favouring the coup leaders. Shredded the upper house fully directly elected to nominees by the miitary select committee (NCPO) which has the power to nominate the Prime Minister replacing the 1997 constitution for the Prime Minister to be nominated by a vote in the House of Representatives by a simple majority, then appointed and sworn-in by the King.

Correction. For as long as I can recall, successive PM's have always asserted that Thailand has a 'special' democracy.
