You do not need ANYTHING deposited in a bank here if you transfer 65k per month from abroad, and you can spend every last satang of it.

Or if your IO allows it, transfer say 50k per month and have just 200k in the bank using the Combination Method

Living the dream, but regrets leaving friends and family, being an 'alien' being double charged, misses football, shopping for food in the UK and the lack of culture in Thailand.

I went back to my country I don't need to have any money in the bank no reports no visa renewal and getting a good pension and still can afford to come to LOS twice a year

Anywhere gets boring if you stay there long enough . Thailand was cheap a few years ago when £ 1 bought 70 + Bt. Not now though .

5-6 months here and the rest back in the UK suits me .

I`d hate to burn all my bridges and be stuck here for the rest of my life . I was lucky ( or unlucky ???? ) enough to chance upon a meeting of expats up here near Udon . It was not a happy occasion . They looked old , tired and generally p*ssed off with life . The Gfs looked even less happy .

If or when life get to boring here in Thailand, I take a few months in Cambodia or Phillipines.

That always set my head straight, and I return to Thailand, with a fresh pair of rose tinted glasses. And love every day for yet another year.

Why even bother to search out expats in the provinces ? 

 

If you even need an an ' expat ' to talk at , to satisfy your need to express yourself , then you might as well stick to the tourist hotspots. English spoken , food like back home , a night out with the lads in the local pub....why bother going somewhere that doesn't meet your requirements for a good time ?

Place is full of culture.

 

The UK, plenty of culture in London, but not English. Hard to meet an Englishman/ woman in London when I lived there.

 

I lived the dream in LOS and I'll miss it till my last breath.

In Pattaya I once attended an expat meeting, not one welcomed me as a potential member.

Never went back.

Most expats I met while out walking ( in places farangs were a rarity ) studiously looked the other way to avoid meeting my eyes.

Why would I even want to get to know people like that?

When lived in Udon Thani, local forum had an excellent monthly meet up.  Met a few very nice people, and developed a few friendships.  Along with more than a few others, who's true colors were exposed when a couple issues arose.  

 

Sort of like extreme rep/dem, vax'd/unvax'd demographics and lines were drawn.  Thought that was really weird.  Afterward, I avoided new 'friendships'.

 

Realized my 'gauge' for friendships ... If I had you over to the house, or I invited to your house.  Meant very few real friends, no matter where I lived.

 

Also noticed the 'look the other way' farangs, if eye contact made.   I'll at least give a head nod, though rarely go out of my way to chit chat it up with strangers, especially if I'm actually doing something.

 

Will strike up, even initiate a conversation if seems appropriate.  Do purposely avoid groups/gathering, as there seems to be one locally, surfside.  Same folks sipping (smoking ???? cigs) chit chatting it up weekly if not nightly.   Fine and I get it, but not for me.  Always been a bit solitary and down right anti social, and UT experience reinforced that mindset.

 

Enjoy being by myself, winning most argument with the dog is plus.  In my mind anyway.

 

On Topic .... Thailand is what you bring with you, or leave behind.  It's simply a location, you make a dream or a nightmare.

If I had 2 mill USD, liquid, a very small lottery wins, then Thailand would be in rear view mirror, and never looking back.  Not sure where I'd go, but it wouldn't here.  After 20+ yrs, nothing of interest to keep me here.

 

Love my life here, but I wouldn't pass up a financial upgrade, along with a location upgrade.  Nomadic till I found a spot, or not.

 

Might just stay nomadic ... $2 mill - 10 yr - $500+ a day.  That works, so no need to settle in, or settle for, any place.

I've lived in many countries, but none had the "appeal" of Thailand. The only equivalent I've heard of is the Philippines, but apparently very violent, so wouldn't want to live there if Thailand available. Heard bad things about Cambodian beaches so that's out.

Western countries- never even an option.

 

It's Thailand by default.

I got a 7-year-itch living in Thailand. Pulled up stakes, moved to Mexico. I couldn't get my burgeoning bottom back to LOS fast enough!

After living in Thailand for a few years.  I find most expats that move here is for one main reason.  They couldn’t afford to live in their own countries.  Due to minimal income and other factors. 
They don’t come here for the culture.  And they are quick to ridicule their own countries because of the personal situations they are in.
