Thai Rath reported that they were contacted by the elder sister of a man from Non Sila district of Khon Kaen, NE Thailand, after he was attacked by police out of uniform when he couldn't pay a debt after gambling at a cock-fighting event.

Her brother was left in a heap with cops believing he was already dead. But he survived and is still in hospital.

Locals at the event claimed they "saw nothing" except the man attack a cop with a bottle.

The sister fears the police will get away with nearly killing her brother. She wants justice but fears police influence will prevent that.

The local police chief said there were no official cock-fighting places on his patch. But all those responsible would be held to account.

The press went to the house of a kamnan (local official) in Ban Pa Por of Ban Phai, Khon Kaen, where they met Suphisara Barisri, 53 the  sister of Woraphop "Den" Sukto, 41, a building contractor from Non Sila district.

She said that on Saturday 15th January Den, who likes everything to do with cock-fighting, went to an event at the home of a teacher called "Maen" in Ban Wang Yao, Ban Han sub-district.

At the event were many police from Ban Phai and Non Sila stations out of uniform.

Den's wife had received a call from a member of the public to come and get him because he had been attacked and needed hospital treatment.

His wife Thapthim, 41, went there but found no one.

But in a nearby shack in a field they found him. He was covered in bruises and injuries from a serious attack and there was blood over his abdomen.

He was taken to Non Sila hospital but his injuries were so severe he was transferred to Khon Kaen Hospital where he stayed for three nights four days until he was allowed home to continue his recovery.

Suphisara said that ten police out of uniform were at the event and the cops were "calling out the odds".

Her brother had a bet but was unable to pay after losing and asked to go home and get money.

A cop got him in a head lock as an argument ensued.

Her brother hit the cop in the head with a bottle of alcohol.

Then the police laid into him.

During the savage attack locals pleaded for his life. Den was in a heap on the ground. The police only stopped when they believed he was already dead. The participants all left.

But he was not dead. A local good Samaritan had helped him to the shack.

The attack happened in full view of many people.

The owner of the property said that he saw nothing, just the original attack on the policeman.

Everybody else also said they saw nothing. This was clearly because no one wanted to get involved as it concerned police, said the sister.

Next the Non Sila police called Den in to face charges for attacking a policeman.

On the way to the police station Den suffered a relapse and was readmitted to Khon Kaen Hospital where he was found to have intestinal bleeding and an infection.

Thapthim said that he was still in hospital.

She said that she and their daughter had gone with the money to pay the gambling debt.

Her husband could remember everyone's face but only the name of one cop - "Mao" from Ban Phai.

"The police only left Den alone because they thought he was dead," she said. Everyone went their separate ways and it was only the actions of the good Samaritan that alerted her.

She said that her daughter had filmed a clip with her husband giving evidence as they thought he might die.

Non Sila police chief Pol Col Sommart Mangthaisong said there were no official cock-fighting places in the area.

"It's not allowed here", he claimed.

Instead this was a sugar cane field owned by a male teacher who was into the sport and had a training area for cock-fighting.

On the day in question people had gone there and they had a bit of a flutter.

He assured the media that he didn't allow gambling and promised action against all involved in the incident.

The sister said the family were facing trouble as there were no witnesses prepared to give evidence.

She said that if there was gambling going on it was incumbent on the police to do something about it.

Instead the police had shown a dereliction of duty and even got involved in a vicious attack on her brother.

It is amazing how these young cocks will naturally fight.  Some get bad wounds on their back or are featherless.  It starts when they are corning size.  This sport seems to be quite popular in Thailand unless it's one of those " we didn't find any xyz" deals.

Sure, sure, next we'll hear the victim was charged for assaulting police, nothing to see here, move on.

I don't understand. Gambling is illegal but there were police there taking part (sarcasm).

I beg to differ, the police chief was very clear  ("It's not allowed here", he claimed.)

Having the brown kicked out of you is not fun, but he knew the rules of the game and chose to break them.. if can't pay don't play.

End of.

Cock fighting is not illegal at licenced venues where it is allowed.

In summary… no prostitution or cock fights… and a eye no evil monkey

In summary...you didn't read what was actually said.  The quote was that there was no official cock fighting there, which would be legal.

No sympathy whatsoever. Anyone who enjoys cock-fighting is at one and the same time both moronic and sadistic.

Exactly. Also zero sympathy to any coward who hits someone with a bottle over the head. Bottom of the barrel - all parties involved.

Assaulting a policeman who wasnt in uniform  for an illegel gambling debt at a cock fight that that never happened in an area that dosnt have cock fights and yet his sister has paid the gambling debt ( to whom) and then no witnesses no CCTV this is a case for sherlock Holmes and  would make a good movie.
