Fun-loving UK teenager dies after taking drugs at Full Moon party in Thailand, inquest reveals

A fun-loving, “fiercely independent” teenager from the United Kingdom died after taking drugs at a Full Moon party in Thailand an inquest heard. A UK coroner yesterday determined that the 18 year old woman from Winchester died by misadventure after taking ecstasy while backpacking in Thailand.

 

The teenager, Eleanor Yates, was found dead in her bed in the Ko Pha Ngan district on February 19 last year.

The inquest, at Portsmouth Coroners’ Court yesterday, heard that she had been travelling extensively in her gap year. She planned to go to the University of Bristol to study film, the Daily Mail reported.

 

The 18 year old had attended a Full Moon party on February 17. The inquest heard that she had taken an ecstasy tablet, also known as MDMA.

 

However, she was found dead at 9am on February 19.

 

The inquest revealed that a post-mortem examination conducted by consultant pathologist Dr Adnan Al-Badri showed that the cause of death was MDMA toxicity resulting in cardiac arrest.

 

Melissa Damsgaard, who had been travelling with Eleanor revealed that six of them went to the Full Moon party on February 17.

very sad indeed,  however anyone who takes drugs unknowingly what it's made of should realize the potential risk involved,  and especially during a Thai full moon party.  How many have died there due to drug taking over the years ...  !

Very sad, of course, but how many people actually die due to some sort of problem with the actual ecstasy tablet itself and not some sort of reaction?  I mean, these things get made in batches, so presumably many other people took them without incident.

well '  .... we'll never really know .....  but taking drugs is a no no in my book.  but each to his own ....

Yes but it is cool when you are a kid to ignore the risks.  You just don't think they apply to you.  Not sure what the answer is to this, but making drugs illegal or putting people in jail or giving out fines is probably not it.  (not that you are suggesting such things)

Compared to the amount of people attending the Full Moon parties and young people dying from drugs elsewhere, this case is not special; however, very sad for the family.

You do understand that alcohol and nicotine equally are drugs ,and often more lethal ? You may argue they are legal but your body doesn’t differentiate,just as in the huge (legal) opioid addiction in USA. "Just the word (drugs) repulses me…"

Again,you do understand that pharmaceutical "drugs " are saving countless lives worldwide? 
Peanuts/strawberries will kill some people.

When I was a teenager, I went to parties, in fact in my twenties too, but I didn't need the crutch of drugs to give me a false feeling of "fun"

 

When it comes to drugs, I have never taken any in my entire life and from that point of view, the cynics may call me "goody goody".

 

The dead girl was described as "fiercely independent". What does this mean? Is it someone who is stubborn, someone who doesn't take advice from anyone including parents, doesn't need anyone's help for anything? I will do what I like! The "fun" life is where one doesn't require any due diligence; can be carefree.

 

She won't suffer anything from her death but her friends and family have to live with this tragedy for the rest of their lives - it is with them I offer my sympathies!

The Netherlands and Amsterdam had the best solution to this in the mid to late 90s when the ecstacy boom started.  The MDMA in its pure form wasn't the biggest danger, it was the other chemicals and drugs such as ketamine that was being mixed into the pills by some to reduce production costs and maximize profit.  Something that I wouldn't be surprised to have some bearing on the case here?  Because they knew that they could never stop the trade and recreational use of the drug, they allowed charities to set up testing stations inside many of the clubs and raves, whereby you could take your pill, they'd scratch off a little amount to test and let you know as to whether there were any nasties in it.  No doubt it saved countless lives over the years and to the best of my knowledge there are certain places still in the Dam that offer this service for a small donation of a couple of euros?

This kind of progressive policy I think is much more effective than jail or browbeating.  Society turns far to fast to violence and oppression.  Drug users know the dangers, they really do.  They just are addicted and willing to take the risk.  We can save lives by giving them safe options.  But society prefers to punish them for their mistakes.  An odd approach, given that you don't punish basketball players for missing baskets, you teach them how to aim better...
