WHO declares end to COVID global health emergency

LONDON, May 5 (Reuters) – The World Health Organization on Friday declared an end to COVID-19 as a global health emergency, marking a major step toward the end of the pandemic that has killed more than 6.9 million people, disrupted the global economy and ravaged communities.

The WHO’s Emergency Committee met on Thursday and recommended the UN-agency declare an end to the coronavirus crisis as a “public health emergency of international concern”, which has been in place for over three years.

“It is therefore with great hope that I declare COVID-19 over as a global health emergency,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, adding that the end of the emergency did not mean COVID was over as a global health threat.

Covid global health emergency is over, WHO says
By Smitha Mundasad and Philippa Roxby

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that Covid-19 no longer represents a "global health emergency".

The statement represents a major step towards ending the pandemic and comes three years after it first declared its highest level of alert over the virus.

Officials said the virus' death rate had dropped from a peak of more than 100,000 people per week in January 2021 to just over 3,500 on 24 April.

The head of the WHO said at least seven million people died in the pandemic.

please stop perpetuating this myth.

yes some people wore masks prior to covid but in no way was it common. i would say it was less than 3 to 5 percent of the population that wore masks prior to covid. which by any measure is a small minority.

this is easily proven with a youtube search which will produce thousands of videos of every day life in and about bkk prior to covid.

Well...I think when you look to Japan, it is a bit different, isn't?

It seems that no-one told Thai Air Asia. I've booked a flight for later this month and the booking says that everyone must wear a mask while checking in, throughout the flight and at baggage claim. Maybe they haven't bothered to update their website? Any recent experiences, anyone?

Any recent experience of companies in Thailand not updating their website or flying on Air Asia? Loads of experience of the first, very little of the latter.
