I thought that a caretaker government was not allowed to make new laws...Besides 1000THB exit fee is stupid idea, you have to pay while leaving as you spend and paid a lot of taxes already at your stay.. Why don't they use their brains first and stop shouting we want to be a top destination in tourism, for many reasons, but on the other hand they drive people away... Suppose a family of 4 has to pay 4000THB for leaving as a surprise at the expensive airport as extra.. People are not stupid.... and than the tourism sector starts to complain again.. we don't have enough tourists.. Start with a good registration instead of the the blue familybook and let everybody fill in a tax form for several years, as 75% of the Thai people don't pay taxes yet.and the Government has no clue who is doing what and earns how much. and welcome tourists to boost the economy...

" thought that a caretaker government was not allowed to make new laws."

Now that you mention it, but the unelected caretaker PM has the soldiers, guns and tanks to do what he wants.

Dream on.

They will only be new dinosaurs in charge, if they get the chance.

Nepotism, Greed, Selfishness. will be at the forefront, as per norm.

While I can't talk about other western countries, what you are saying is spot on. You have just also referred to the UK here.

Where's the 800 THB departure tax?

My bad, it is Bt.700.00.

So the question begs....

... Is this 1000 Baht departure tax and additional new tax on top of the 700 baht departure (airport) tax.

or... is it simply an increase from 700 to 1000 baht of the existing tax ????

Pure and utter GREED !!!

Now tell us what you think of other countries that have been charging significantly more for years on end.

People should wait and see what actually transpires before getting hot under the collar.

No, tax goes to the Revenue Department which is what this whole thread is about ????

That is not strictly true. The Passenger Service Charge charged by most countries, 700 baht for Thailand, is a ring fenced tax to be used on passenger security and facilities at airports. There is a question mark over if it is a change to the PSC or an additional tax.

The UK has 2 taxes, PSC and APD(Air Passenger Duty), the APD is an excise duty which is included in general taxation.

As usually rubbish reporting from ThaiExaminer, FB level and below.

There is already a departure tax of 700 baht, so the passengers won't pay "1000 baht more"

As far as the apocalyptic tourism picture painted by some is concerned, the departure tax is implemented by a lot of countries:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Departure_tax

Would any government slug you with extra tax if they can? You bet. There are rumours that the Australian departure tax is going to go up in the next budget due in a few days.

It would be really stupid to levy 500 baht tax for land border crossings, it would kill the inbound land tourism from Malaysia.

The questionnaire says the new levy will help prevent locals from spending too much aboard.

This sounds like a bad joke.  It's a terrible indictment on the Thai education system that they think people will believe this.  Much like saying the B300 tourist tax will go to maintain tourist attractions or help foreign tourists in need.

I assume they saw an opportunity to get rich easily.

yes i almost forgot about that too, if you're an oldy you should remember that, they did charge us already before we have to pay at the vending machine and then they included into your ticket, how are they going to justify charging another 1000

There is no new tax. It's all fake news.

How about a few changes that might actually encourage more tourists to stay longer in Thailand?

Like 60 days visa free on arrival and if you stay 30 to 60 days you will GET 1000 THB on departure to thank you for extending your stay and spending a lot more than 1000 THB.

Like reform immigration to eliminate having to hire an agent to bribe the immigration agent to get a visa if you want to be a snowbird spending 6 months a year in Thailand?

i know zero chance of either happening as they might actually result in less hassles, ,more $$ spread around the country and less money available to bribes to various "officials".

The 700 THB amount is listed as "Passenger Service Charge". Where do you see a departure tax?

So the government scams you on the way in, then scams you on the way out and in between, you’re at the mercy of all the thousands of street scams, taxi scams, temple scams and all the other scams tourists are subjected to whilst visiting Thailand.
Way to go Thailand. ????

About as subtle as a mugging!

Leaves a nasty taste.

I can understand the principle - to pay for all the mess, damage, and to help hospitals, but the method stinks.

Perhaps higher 'sin taxes'- legalize and tax vaping, etc.

They can polish it on the documents all the want.

Years ago it used to be called numerous things... International Departure / Airport tax etc...  and it was 500 baht, paid in cash at a ticket-booth at the airport, then the ticket was handed over prior to passing through security. Domestic Departure / Airport Taxi was 30 baht at the time and required a ticket in the same manner.

Proper developing nation stuff - just like the tickets at some food courts !!!

It caused mayhem for the tourists who had no idea and were caught out without any cash remaining.

Thailand wisened up and sorted this so that the cost was simply added to the ticket and no one noticed anymore, the price even went up to 700 baht (or is it 750, or 800 baht now, I’m not sure).
