Thaksin remains Thai rural hero despite charges

By Nopporn Wong-Anan

AT SAMAT, Thailand, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Even though Thailand's Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant for him this week, ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra remains a hero to the rural poor.

Almost a year after he was deposed in a bloodless coup, farmers in the rice-growing district of At Samat, where Thaksin staged a reality TV show of his visit last year, still talk about the projects he started and the empty promises of his predecessors.

I'm not sure I have any particular concerns, I'm just saying that Man City buyout saga gives bad example in terms of transparency and good governance. Should I be concerned about it?

If Thaksin finally buys a club he can apply for permanent residency there and enjoy lots of rights, particularly protection from prosecution from Thailand. Clever way to get out of legal troubles. Talk about legalised money laundering. People are watching. Not you and me, probably, but those who might need to legalise and protect their money.

Should I be concerned? It's not my reputation, you know.

It is amazeing that people like you claim to be all for justice then go on like a lynch mob you seem to ignore the fact that for all the storys that are going on about him the junta has come up with a very iffy case about his wife buying some pottsy land. That is the total .As for money laundering what the f..K are you going on about? The junta has their hands on the disputed money from the shin deal.So what money is being laundered?Stop the bullshit if you want people to take you seriously. You claim to be educated people well act like you are .I didn't go to school for one day after i was twelve years old but at least i can work out when i'm being fed bullshit as in junta proporganda.Have you forgot or chose to forget the statement of the junta prime minister the day after they took over? They said that they had to do it for national security reasons because he sold the satilite to a not thia company & they could now listen in to all thia army & navy movements.Somebody managed to get to the bottom of this & challanged the junta for a statement .The statement was made that when they took power they said these things in order to make thia people hold on to what they have got.In other words it was all bullshit. Now if you are american i understand that you cant work these things out ,the fact that you vote in idiots like reagan & 2 bushes shows your intelligence limits. But if you are from somewhere else then maybe you should consider getting checked out to see if you are a junta brainwashed victim. Finally i would just like to add Long may Franks wallet be open for the greater good Manchester City F.C. The only football team to come from Manchester

Well, in today's world there are inventions such as "email" and "telephones".

Those thingies can be used when assigning a reporter to a story.

No I don't think you should be concerned: it's simply not very important or interesting.

Incidentally you are misinformed on what additional security the purchase of Man City gives Thaksin. If he is considered by the British courts to have a prima facie case to answer in Thailand it makes no difference whether he is a permanent resident or not. However realistically this will have to await Thailand's return to democracy before being taken forward. As I have pointed out before he would be on the plane from Heathrow very shortly if Thailand pressed the issue of the drugs war murders.I expect this to happen as the Thais sometimes say" in the afternoon of my next life"

Britain can not extride anybody if they could come to any harm Britain has to abide by the Euorpean court of Law

There's at least a dozen cases in the works. Land deal is just a start.

Money laundering - ask yourself where he got the money to pay for Man City. He has filed numerous asset declarations and not once mentioned any overseas acounts.

And if you read my post again, I said Man City's reputation does not concern me in the least.

Keep up the good job of upholding it yourself.

I think I missed that.

It doesn't matter as long as he stays in the UK, but he likes to travel and so need to apply for a visa. Having a criminal conviction on his visa application does not help.

Chinese have reportedly cancelled his one year multiple entry recently.

That's not the total; merely the first. Also coming will be the SC Asset case, followed by:

the committee was ready to submit four more cases against Mr Thaksin to the Attorney-General's office involving a laundry list of corruption.

How about stock manipulation Mr Chachacha? Millions stashed in Thaksin's servants names for years.

Not forgetting a 'gift' to Pojaman's brother of millions paid through the maid's name.

Come on, you're defending the indefensible.

According to today’s Bangkok post Thaksin plans to fight extradition. Very quickly as I understand it, he can’t leave the UK if that is the case. If the Thais gain custody of him while he is in transit, “Next stop Bangkok.” He also forfeits his extradition defense when he leaves the UK.

Please correct me if I am wrong on this, I am going from very old information.

Why Thailand's Generals Will Root for Man U

Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007 By HANNAH BEECH

The guy selling spears of chilled guava down the street sports a Chelsea football jersey. Everywhere in soccer-mad Bangkok, in fact, people wear garments proclaiming their affiliation with one or another English Premier League team. But one jersey you're unlikely to spot? That of Manchester City. It's not because City has struggled, unsuccessfully, for three decades now to emerge from the shadow of its more moneyed crosstown rival, Manchester United. Even Birmingham's lackluster Aston Villa, after all, maintains a dogged fan base in Thailand's capital. No, the reason Manchester City is taboo in Bangkok is because its new owner is ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

If one recalls the Pinochet case, {98} he was in London for medical treatment, and was unable to leave the UK {placed under [luxury] house arrest} whilst the action to extradite him {to Spain for trial on HR chages} was in process. In that case the then Home Secretary Jack Straw, released him on medical grounds without facing trial and he returned to Argentina.

Are you sure? Mohamed Al-Fayed owns Fulham (and Harrods) and has been repeatedly denied UK naturalisation. I think it possible that he (MA-F) does have permanent resident status but on what grounds (save of having lots of money) I wouldn't hazard a guess. Naturalisation and permanent residence are not the same thing. If Thaksin is, God forbid, granted permanent residence he would still be Thai and IMO at risk of being returned to LoS to face the music.

It is certain that owning a minor UK football club will not attract any special privileges except to attend the FA Cup Final.

It is my fervent wish that Thaksin tries to 'buy' a senior UK civil servant, or better still a judge. After a year or two he may get to like porridge.

ASC traces cash stash used in Thaksin Manchester City purchase

The Assets Scrutiny Committee (ASC) has traced part of the huge sum of money deposed PM Thaksin Shinawatra spent to take over Manchester City football club, said a source. The ASC found that 1.7 billion baht was withdrawn from the accounts of Shinawatra siblings, Panthongtae and Pinthongta. Panthongtae transferred 1.1 billion baht from his Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) account and Pinthongta transferred 900 million baht to a Bangkok Bank (BBL) account held by Pramai Suree Property Co. The property firm moved the amount to its SCB account and then transferred 1.7 billion baht to Sports Investment Ltd in the UK, said the source.

Thaksin lawyer says Man City cash legal

Funds that ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra used in taking over Manchester City football club were legally earned, his lawyer Noppadon Pattama said Tuesday. His defence came after Assets Scrutiny Committee chaired by Khunying Jaruvan Maintaka traced the 1.7 billion baht fund used in buying the premier league team which was transferred from accounts of Mr Thaksin's children, Mr Panthongtae and Ms Pinthongta. "The probe of the ASC will not affect the purchase of the club because the deal has been completed," Mr Noppadon said. He added the only goal the league is pursuing is how to make Man City win every match.

Thaksin... the "hub" of "honest mistakes"....

Thaksin scores shares own goal

Thaksin Shinawatra has admitted scoring an own goal in his takeover of Manchester City.

The former Thai PM has had to reissue letters to the shareholders in the club after a number were mistakenly offered just 10p a share.

The correct figure should have been 40p a share - a fact Shinawatra's team have now made clear.

The new owner holds 96 per cent of the club and is therefore able to force the remaining small shareholders to sell up. A letter was sent out to all of them outlining the proposed terms. But a spokesman for Shinawatra admitted some of the letters had incorrectly offered 10p rather than 40p. The spokesman said: "This was a mistake."

"We don't know how many of the letters were sent out with the wrong figures but all small shareholders should be receiving correct letters tomorrow. "The true figure should be 40p a share in line with what everyone else was offered."

Shinawatra has invested £120m in City in shares, debt-clearance and new players.

Reports were also emerging today that Shinawatra has issued libel suits in Thailand over stories which he says are destroying his reputation in Britain.

His lawyers are understood to have issued writs in the Bangkok civil court against the former Secretary of Thailand's Supreme Court and a member of the Assets Examination Committee.

Shinawatra is to battle accusations that he was responsible for 2,500 deaths in a war on drugs and that he profited from selling Burma a satellite service with money that he ordered a Thai bank to loan them.

Presumably for the usual 1 Billion Baht per-case ? :D

Does Frank think that sueing public officials, for having the temerity to attempt to do their jobs, is really the way to support democracy ? If so - then he must truely be demo-crazy himself ! :D

If the alleged libels are affecting his reputation ( his what ? ! :o ) in the UK, then he might consider suing there instead, which would be good for a few laughs. Sorry Frank, but you will find it harder in the UK, to prevent the truth about yourself from coming out.

"Ask my children, they use our computers all the time." :D

Unless they were using a typewriter :o, making every letter unique to every shareholder, thus allowing particular mistakes on each letter, it would be indeed quite interesting to see, in this day and age of easy mass printing and mailing, if a particular criteria applies evenly to all who received an offer for 10p. and the same happening with those offered 40p.

Suree's Man City move in doubt after work permit denial

BANGKOK - Suree Sukha's hopes of becoming the first Thai to play in the English Premier League have hit a setback after his application for a work permit was rejected by the British government.

Fullback Suree had impressed Manchester City on a two-week trial, but the Home Office refused him a permit as Thailand are ranked outside FIFA's top 70 and he had not played in 75 percent of their international matches, the Bangkok Post reported on Saturday.

Suree, who earns less than $300 a week in the Thai league, said he was hopeful the club could pull a few strings to get him on board.

"Man City will talk to the British government and resubmit my application," he told the daily.

Suree was one of three Thai players recently invited by City's new owner, exiled former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, to train with the northwest club, who are currently second in the league behind Chelsea.

Thaksin's critics have dismissed his 81 million pounds City takeover and efforts to sign Suree as attempts to win support in his homeland with a view to a return to politics.

The billionaire tycoon, ousted in a coup last year and accused by the junta of corruption and abuse of power, insists he has quit politics.

- Reuters

==============================================================================

Interesting that Suree expects things to be resolved "Thai-style".... afterall, in Thailand, Thaksin would have been able to pull strings and accomplish darn near anything.

Work permit woes? Sounds a lot like Thailand.
