A British man is warning tourists to keep their wits about them in Pattaya, Thailand, after he was allegedly deceived by a Thai woman who he claims stole his luxury Rolex watch worth almost one million baht.

At 11pm yesterday, a 38 year old anonymous man of British nationality spoke to reporters about his bad experience with a Thai woman in Pattaya. He said he hopes that publicising his story through the media acts as a cautionary tale for tourists and help lead to the criminal’s arrest, reports BangkokBizNews.

The Brit said via a translator, his female friend, that he became acquainted with a Thai woman who he met by chance at a condo in Nong Prue subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri province.

One night, he took the woman back to his condo room. According to the tourist, he got into the shower in the middle of the night, and when he got out, the woman he brought home was nowhere to be found.

My guess is she did not live in the condo but was a guest of someone else and he caught her on her way out originally and obtained her contact info. Just supposition on my part.  Why travel with high end watches or even wear gold out and about.  Prime targets.

And a shower in the middle of the night? Did he mean when they got in from being out, or he just always gets up and showers in the middle of the night, I am a little confused with this part......

I don't even understand why people need to wear a watch nowadays.

How can you go for a nightly beach road walk without a proper timepiece

Maybe now there is a good deal for a Rolex at some pawn shop.

Unless I am going to a high end event my watches, which I got from a dead friend, stay in my safe, and I only wear my cheap digital watch which measures my steps. My phone costs the same as some of the higher end cheap watches.

I'll bet money this fellow is ex SAS or Delta force.I've met many over the years while warming a bar stool in Pattaya.

All BS aside I actually bought a (real) one years ago at a bonafide dealer at Siam Square BKK.

I sold it a year later.I was traveling a lot at the time and had the distinct feeling I was being sized up for a mugging on more that a few occasions.

BINGO - it didn’t take long for someone to post such irrelevant remarks...

But you don't need a watch... you can just ask anyone else for the time or use your cell-phone...  :whistling:????

(yes, that was sarcasm),.....

You're projecting....   That maybe why ‘you’ would wear a nice watch because thats the only reason you can consider you would wear one.

For other people, they just wear nice things because they like them, its the same for cars, clothes etc...

Its always the same in theses threads - Someone has a nice watch, someone drives a German car and someone pipes up stating that its only to impress others without any understanding whatsoever.

Mods should move that to the Rolex forum...

I know that some people might not believe this but not everyone has their phone in their hand 24 hours a day. If you are someone who actually has a life then a quick flick of the wrist to check the time is, and will always be the way to go.

Walking around with an expensive Rolex should be no problem in Thailand. Every thief thinks it will be a 500-Baht copy.

Indeed...  or even if he has insurance at all.

When I tried to get insurance for some higher-end items (including Wife’s jewerly) it was either prohibitively expensive, or the exclusions were ridiculous.. (i.e. maid or condo staff thieving was not covered)... And for watches, it was covered if it was dropped or damaged, but not if it was stolen, unless stolen during a ‘robbery’ (i.e. with a police report) and the police concluded it was an ‘outside’ job and not condo-staff or someone permitted to enter the condo like a delivery person or a guest etc....

Ultimately - I didn’t go with the insurance because to insure the realistic probabilities included theft would ultimately cost more over a couple of years than the items themselves.

------------

That said: In this case, there are lot of very good fake high-end watches around... I wonder how many people have / are attempting an insurance scam.

A million baht rolex on his insurance claim ... (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). Anonymous Brit I wonder why. Embarasment, fraudster identification, ... ???

My Wife has quite a large diamond ring...  (it stays in the safe) she had a QZ replica made which she wears at events (weddings etc) or when travelling - Kind of makes the piece pointless, but it has strong sentimental value.

As for fakes watches - the replicas are so good these days its difficult (nearly impossible to tell) unless the movement is checked.... Thus - IF someone wants the real watch, they could easily have the ‘real one’ then when going somewhere potentially risky while still wanting to wear the watch they enjoy they could ’temporarily’ use the fake...

Personally, I just have my Apple watch... but thats still 30,000 baht and I don't want it stolen !!!..

Would I wear it in Pattaya ??? I don’t know... I’d i probably not even consider the issue and just wear it.

A US$12,0000 Submariner ???.....   probably not on a night out in the bars etc..

And you're naive enough to buy his story?

You haven't figured-out that he lied about meeting her at the condo because was too embarrassed to admit he paid her to go home with him after he saw her shooting ping-pong balls out of her hoo-haw?

There’s a Rolex Forum ????   ????

In the years when I used to do that kind of thing, however drunk I was, I would always undress in the bathroom, on the basis that my money was in my shorts pocket (could be as much as 15,000 Baht). One night, probably down to alcohol, I left my shorts unattended with what's-er-name in the bedroom. I discovered later that a $100 bill had disappeared.????

Yup... thats a very valid point.

Which means if he picked up the bit of strumpet from a bar there may be some recourse.

If however, elsewhere randomly he’s kind of stuck... unless the police help in stalk the area.... But would they bother, it may take a few weeks.... and even if they did catch her the watch and the money would be long gone and all she has to do is deny....

Thats the issue with anything valuable...  we end up becoming owned by the things we own and its often easier not to own ’nice’ things..... (but fully understandable that nice things are also enjoyable to have).

If i owned the insurance company i would be reluctant to pay out in this case. Leaving a 900,000 baht watch unattended with a Lady of The Night in Pattaya is as irresposible as not wearing a motorbike helmet when drunk without a licence on a bangkok motorway.

Maybe he should set up a Go Fund Me like all the Brit motorcyle crashers.

My old (wealthy) friends wore real Rolex's everywhere over the almost 20 years that I knew them, and never had a problem. The one had the most amazing watch collection. 3 or 4 Rolex's, a Hublot, a limited edition Patek Phillipe (worth around $60k).
