Yes, depends how it was transferred but yes she would need ID to withdraw it or an atm or credit, debit card. It could have been via bank, western union or another service. Or she could have already pulled it and used it up or it was never sent.

 

Why would you have someone transfer money if you have no way to access it? The whole story smells of bs.

One wonders why she can't go to the US Embassy and ask for help, from what I understand the US Embassy does have a program where they will lend American citizens the money to get home and they have to pay it back, so what's going on here?

 

I think there's a lot more than meets the eye, the story does not sound 100%, yes tourists do go broke while they're overseas, but there are too many loose ends here. 

Definitely... These stories (and many on modern media) are simply a regurgitation without any fact checking or investigation.

 

With a lack of cohesion, an absence facts, a wealth of conflicting information such stories are a lightening rod for a number of halfwitted posters on this forum to completely buy into what is written as fact and cast their judgment without any deeper thought.

 

Shouldn’t we instead be flaming the the actual author for regurgitating such a flawed article in the first place ???  

 

The most basic of questions to be asked here is "why can’t the lady in question receive that $10,000 sent by her sister ?”.... the journalist (term used extremely loosely) couldn’t even be bothered to find out about that.

Why ??... because its utterly lazy reporting and no-one cares about the facts anymore... its easier to cast judgment when the story is incomplete and plays into the hands of those with ’trigger finger sanctimony’....

It's also possible she's on overstay, so there's another potential option.

Many times over the years I entered Thailand with no outward ticket booked. Although one time I printed out and kept an 'edited' ticket/flight details, just in case.
