I have a relatively obscure wristwatch which is not valuable at all but which I rather like. The battery needs replacing and so I would like it to be done by a skilled watch smith in Bangkok, who knows what he is doing and can be relied upon not to mess it up.Any suggestions?

Quite a few on the street (well, loads actually) and many in malls. Advise looking for one that solely does watches, clocks & straps, rather than a place offering other services as well.

The former often seem to do the job with great care and with an almost reverential interest in doing it well. After all, it's their trade. Good luck.

Changing a battery does not require a "skilled watch smith", even for a decent watch.  If it's a waterproof watch that you need re-sealing after opening, that's a different question.

As several members have indicated, changing the battery should not be a major task, unless the watch needs to be waterproof.

The only down side with using a street cart watch shops, as has been suggested, is that you wont get a receipt so if the battery fails after a week its no good going back in the hope of getting them to replace the battery again.

There are a number of decent watch repair places in BKK.  I use Expert Watch located in the basement area of Central World to replace my wife's watch battery.  I also use them to service my Rolex Air King which is 55 years old.  They have 2 engineers at the shop who deal with battery changes, watch strap replacements etc.  Major repairs and services are sent to their Head Office.  They are reasonably priced and will give you a receipt plus 12 month warranty on the battery.

I hope this helps

My expensive watches go back to the manufacturer.  The others I bring to the watch repair shop on the bottom floor of Robinsons, Saphan Taksin pier. Next to Bangrak Bazaar.  Been using him for the last 8 years with never an issue.  Really nice guy.  I speak Thai, but he also speaks English pretty good ! ! !

Changing battery is a rather simple task to anyone in the business. Don’t stress over it.

One would like to think.  I used Timpsons (UK, I know), for about 3 times on the trot to change battery, then had water in watch one day, kept misting up.

I was in Thailand when this happened, went to a watch stop in MBK who opened the watch to discover a broken rubber seal.  Timpsons!!!

I threw the watch away, did irk me - cost about £250
