They can't. and go by what they're feeling at the time, which sometimes leads them into bad situations or a final one. My best friend , who had a great wife, nice rental house, job, hobbies, playing drums, hockey, dog, nice family, many friends, put a hose into the back of his van from the exhaust, and went to sleep, forever. He was always the class clown (Robin Williams), and tried to make people laugh. When I would go to his house at midday, his mom said he was still sleeping (major symptom if done a lot). He self medicated, like a lot of us, but for him it was to take away pain at times. This was in 1987, when there weren't a lot of medicines for the symptoms, and we didn't understand it , nor the counseling one can get. It's impossible to understand how bad they can feel, even though we all get depressed at times. This is a dark hole they get into, where nothing matters anymore, and they think there's no way out of. Support from a loved one is the most important thing they can get, although 9 out of 10 relationships fail because of it. One can't function and the other doesn't understand why, and they leave. With medication to help some symptoms, and a partner that understands and supports them, it can be handled, but not always.

Nice post.

I don't get this 'threatening' to jump business. If you're going to jump then do it. If not, then stop wasting everyone's time. Make your mind up. Think about it before you climb out onto a balcony, not after.

Rational people don't want to jump. Depression creates irrational thoughts.

He is tore between jumping to end the mental pain and staying alive and trying to live.

Thanks. We're pretty fragile, us humans, aren't we. Despite often not even imagining we are.

I'm guessing this is sarcasm, as weed doesn't have you do things like this unless you are also suffering from some mental condition. Depression can do this, where some lose care about everything and can do some very strange things. I, and hundreds of others I've known, have smoked weed and never did anything like this. On the contrary, it makes you relax and think good things usually.

From the article in Thaiger

However, excessive use can result in rapid fluctuations in blood pressure, feelings of panic, and hallucinations due to the high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) present in the substance. THC can remain in the body system for up to seven days after use.

What's the problem, If he wants to jump, his choice.that's the way he wants to go.

Why are there so many suicides in the ex-pat community, especially this leaping off tall buildings in Pattaya?

So many?   How many do you think there have been recently?

No, that's just transferring responsibility. Accept instead of expecting. It is as it is, there is nothing else, start from there. He could be mentally ill, in which case he doesn't have a starting point. Drugs and/or alcohol as an escape perhaps but then he was expecting instead of accepting. 2,000 years ago the stoic philosopher and Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius said, "You can't control outside circumstances but you can control your reaction to them" that is as true today as it was then.

It is plain to see that the man was on some kind of a 'high' and not in full control of his faculties to be doing that.

So... he's the one responsible for getting high... let him deal with it.

Go find your safe place...

Expressing that telling suicidal people to kill themselves is disgusting isn't something that belongs in a safe space. It should be common sense and the bare basics of compassion. Unsurprising that there are edgelords on AN that can't reach even that extremely low-set bar.

Hopefully you won't tell a relative or loved one to jump if they're ever up on that ledge.

Glad he didn't do a final swan-dive.

Not so nice being temporarily 'scheduled' and taken to the psych ward.  Hope nurse Ratchet was in a good mood that day.
