According to law prisoners can get pardoned with over 70y. of age.

Within this year is my guess.

Normal procedure actually in Thailand.

Without serving any meaningful part of their actual sentence? I've never heard of that kind of exception in Thai law.

Do you have a source for that that you can provide a link to?

BANGKOK, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who returned from self-exile on Tuesday, will serve a total of eight years in prison, according to a statement by the Supreme Court.

The jail term covers three different cases for abuse of power and malfeasance, illegally ordering a state-run bank to issue a foreign loan, and illegally holding shares via nominees.

My bet is on his not having to serve 8 years. Political deal pending or he would not have returned ... unless on death's door.

Anyone running a book on the truthfulness of the above statement?  10:1 he's not locked up for more than 8 months, not years.

Who cares? They would make an exception for him anyway. Money talks, particularly in Thailand...

However long, or short, his time in jail he will still serve longer than Mr Red Bull for killing a cop

Mr Red Bull has more influence than an ex prime minister? ????

After a medical check-up, the Department of Corrections stated that former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, 74, has five medical conditions. He will be held in a separate medical ward within the prison and monitored by medical specialists.

The five conditions include ischemic heart muscle, chronic pulmonary inflammation, high blood pressure, degenerated spine, and abnormal posture.

six conditons if you count a square head!

That said, the stage is perfectly set for royal, pardon. He appaently has the aforemetioned health issues, and he is over 70.  That two criteria met before he has soent a night in jail.

oh to be a fly on the wall and see how (and where) he spends his first night back

Regardless of what we might be reading or hearing.....nothing will come of these proposed rumours or officialdom.

A deal has been made.

Come on people, wake up.

Well I did not think he would return to Thailand unless a deal was arranged

So I wait with abated breath to see what transpires ????

Can't see him doing 8 years ????

No one wears ankle chains inside Thai prisons unless they are being punished for in-jail misbehaviour.

Thailand's jails are not barbaric ... unlike the US

They have to be careful he has many enemies, in jail someone just might take a pop at him for fame and fortune,

We shall see. This morning he certainly looked like master of the situation: police saluting him, homage to the King, hugs and waves for his followers ... The news clips could scarcely have been bettered. The Big Man returns.

Even if it takes 2 weeks before he's out of clink, he still makes the dinosaurs look like the very little men they really are.

"Master of the situation" ?

You believe that BS?

You have no idea who is pulling the strings.

Maybe he will be allowed  serve as Prime Minister anyway from his prison cell. In the U.S. a president may serve from prison, as you may have heard regarding Onald Rump. I have a feeling though they told Pita to scram for a reason, to make way for Mr. T. Just one of those wild hunches you have...

Ah, my broken clock was right; he actually returned.

Now, just how long will he actually be in jail ? Not long; no way he would return if there wasn't some grand plan in place for him to eventually become PM again.
