Increase Thai prices by 300% who rates it a nice place to live? Most would leave probably 95%. Its cheap with ok women. Otherwise its a 2nd world country. Last 30+ years here in LOS. I'm sad that so many folks have to include words about bar girls, there's plenty of other things in life. My very big item is family, I live with my wonderful caring Thai son and his wonderful Thai wife and 4 great loving grandkids. My delightful Thai wife passed on, she was a doctor of medicine and an inspiration for a happy and fulfilling life. Love the food too. 3 1

Popular Post HauptmannUK
I spent a lot of time working internationally (inc. lot of time in Thailand) until taking early retirement at age 56 in 2018. My wife of 12 years (Thai) and I split our time between UK and Thailand in three-month blocks. Life is very good in both countries. A 9/9. In the UK I have a house in a pretty rural village. Its very clean, green and the people are very pleasant. Lots of countryside walks. My wife loves it. My adult offspring live not far away, and they really like my wife and always visiting for Thai meals etc. In Thailand my wife has a condo in Pattaya and two houses near Udon. But we also travel a lot in the region, enjoying different foods and relaxing. In the UK I am still 50% owner of our family car dealership (car sales, service, MoT) - so if I get bored I can drive over there and help out on the sales pitch or in the workshop. I also have a small collection of cars in the which I dabble with - a 1974 Ford Consul GT ('The Sweeney') which I'm slowly restoring, a GT86, an old Celica, an Alfa and a 2018 Aston Martin DB11 5.2 V12 which I bought for myself as a retirement present (turned out to be a disappointment, so its going......). My wife is a partner in a hotel and restaurant business in the UK (which is the main reason we still spend 6 months each year there). She is a workaholic when she's there (she was working 90 hour weeks - now cut to 60 hours). I'm hoping she'll bail out of it soon because I'm worried she over works and it also causes tension between us - but it makes good income and she's rather addicted to saving money 'for her old age'. If my wife stops working then it'll be 9 months in SE Asia and 3 months in UK. If it weren't for my wife being Thai and me already speaking the language etc then truthfully I'd probably be retired in Spain. But Thailand still feels pretty good to me overall, the major downside being the driving and concerns about things like emergency services and healthcare. We drive a lot here, and I do find the very poor driving standards to be wearing. 2

Popular Post spidermike007
At least an 8 here, and maybe would be a 6 at most, "back there". This is an entirely subjective topic, of course. But some of us live very good lives here. Some of us have been fortunate enough to find an outstanding woman, who is delightful to be around, on a daily basis, always has our back, and is fun, smart, and lovely. For me, that likelihood of finding that back in the US, would be very low. So, that is a big factor for me. The second factor is just the quality of life. Sure, I miss some of the culture back home. The theatre, independent film (which I can download here with no issues at all, and a super fast 1 gbps fiber optic connection, at under 700 baht per month!), stand up comedy, live jazz, etc. But I have a lovely home that I rent, for about 10% of what I would pay in California, I live very well on an income which is not huge, have access to great health care, at a tiny fraction of what it costs in the US, and do not have to put up with alot of the aggravation that I had to when I lived back there. I also like the Thai people. I appreciate their lightness of being, their humor, their passion for fun and games, and generally find most of them to be delightful to be around. And the food. I adore great Thai food. It is a very personal choice. I have friends who seem to be dropping like flies. I could be dead next year. You just don't know. I am not extravagant, but I live very, very well. A nice house, a new car every few years, new motorbikes for my gal and I every few years, a great art collection, plenty of good wine in the wine cooler, a new 77" OLED TV, a world class home theatre, plenty of international travel, etc. For me, it is a great lifestyle, that I could only dream of in the US. Well worth the expense and very easy to justify. Life is way too short. I have never been a person of extreme thrift. To each his own. I used to have more issues than I do now. I worked on my attitude, which was getting in the way of appreciating Thailand for what it is, and was clouding my experience here. Used to stress over stupid stuff, as you can see from some of my past posts. Used to allow the politics to make me angry. Now it is not something I take seriously, just something I comment on, without anger or an emotional investment. Now, I just tend to laugh it off. Spent some real time back in the US recently, and it allowed some clarity and perspective, that I am very grateful for. Now, I just chuckle at most of the nonsense. Water off a duck's back, so to speak. 2

4MyEgo
Here 8 years, built a big comfy house to which I could only dream of back in the old country. We won't mention the cost of living being about 1/3rd of what it is back in the old country. I have always said this, if you have money and live in Thailand, life is good, if you're on the pension, you still have a better life than back in the old country by far, but have to budget wisely, that means no more than a meal a day to compensate you for those 10 large ones at the local water hole every night ???? Thailand 8, the reduced score is 1) because of the corruption and 2) lack of police presence on the roads to control all the idiots who can't drive/ride. The last few years in farang land, 4. Don't get me wrong, I prefer no cops on the road vs cops on the road, but it would be nice to see them out and about sticking it to the cowboys. The corruption, well, as little as it is on my side, had to fork out 500 baht at immigration the other day to transfer the stamps onto my new passport, it's free, but you try arguing with those bozzo's, and yes it's a little amount but it still urkes me, could have used that for tonight and Saturdays drinks ???? Still an 8, but then again the weather can be a little trying at times as well as the smoke burning, don't start me or that would be another 2 off the cuff when I think about it. SbuxPlease
My first year in Thailand: 8 Second Year: 5 Third Year: 2 Fourth Year: 6 Fifth Year until now: 7 The initial fascination with the place wore off fast once it stopped being new. I started a business which hastened my discontent and went through a stage where I felt like I couldn't shake the stress. Every time some new senseless red tape popped up (which as we know can be pretty often), it was like one more nail in the coffin of my personal hellish insanity. Since that difficult period I decided to either a) leave or b) figure out how to accept what it is - without trying to change all of Thailand to match my ideas of what's best. ???? I've leaned hard into option B and found that after I started getting to the beach more often, better delegating tasks to people who are equipped to deal with bull-splat, and just stop worrying about everything. I also really leaned into building a good social circle of others who are also happy. Now I've found the enjoyment again. Home country, USA: 6.5-7.5. I do miss my friends and family, and honestly sh*t just works pretty well in my city and it's gorgeous in the summer time. But I don't miss how hard I hard to work just to keep pace with the next unhappy guy when I lived there.

When I lived there, I saw them everyday, especially in larger towns like Austin and San Antonio. I think Thai ladies are the prettiest females on earth, but there were some western women that would rival any here. Prices suck, but that's happening here also, and will continue to rise.
