Pattaya/Jomtien– On September 22nd, 2023, Mr. Ekkarat Khantharo, director of the Pattaya regional marine department, relevant officials, and community representatives held a meeting on the ongoing Jomtien Beach enhancement project.

Mr. Ekkarat stated that the project in Phase 1 aims to enhance the overall scenery along Jomtien Beach and fix seawater erosion problems. The goal is for the beach to be a tourist attraction for relaxation and recreation purposes. In the first phase, heavily eroded areas were filled with additional sand from the Na Jomtien subdistrict to the Pattaya city area, at a total distance of 3,575 meters.

With the enhancement of the scenery, there has been positive feedback from locals, merchants, and both Thai and foreign tourists. To maintain the beautiful scenery, no private businesses are currently being allowed in the actual beach area.

Does that solve the erosion problem or just cover it up for a while?

Beach replenishment is nothing new--and not unique to Thailand.  Years ago I watched Ocean City, Maryland in the USA replenish its beach after a big storm washed a lot of it away.  A beach resort's biggest attraction is the beach.  It makes perfect sense to preserve it.

I wonder if the extended distance from the shoreline this has created means condo developments will be permissable closer to beach road in future. All recent developments have been quite a bit back but there is  a lot of prime vacant land that runs directly up to the road.

Not only sand replacement but the native trees with palms like the North end parking lot that used to be sandy shady area. Then there is the construction trailer trash .In other words they can't stop screw ing this  place up with their bogus kicked back  "enhancements"IMG_20230515_122209_1.thumb.jpg.f3fed37a6139440aea5ddb84ce758b26.jpgIMG_20230830_125429_1.thumb.jpg.da844a39e1632aeceff3dcd34d646ea6.jpg

Totally agree it's a crime with Pattaya Beach how so many valuable and useful shade trees were removed, unnecessary and ugly parking was added, and seating removed.  But, those are separate issues from beach replenishment, making sure that there is still a beach for people to enjoy.  I used to live in south Jomtien and parts of the beach there were very narrow, especially when the tide was in.
