Most western guys that work in Thailand from a young age on't have any savings or pension, so they have to work until they die. I'm guessing the OP is one of those people.

Well, I already had a property that I didn't foolishly sell when I moved to live the dream that is now worth close to million bucks.

So, if I sell it and start drawing from the savings account I will have over 100,000 baht extra income every month without ever touching the principal.... while I wait for the petty government pension when I reach 65 years of age (my senior years).

This does not include my wife's monthly income of 70,000 baht which we spend together.

So, I have more than enough and you are wrong.

What I don't have in Thailand is self worth. I want to run a business. I want the thrill of starting something new. And I want free stuff while I am doing it which I will get in the nanny state,

I see.

Time will tell if I will end up in this category - I've met many broke 60 years olds here - but I think if you don't leave it too late to save and invest you can have money to retire on here too (it helps to avoid liquor, ladies, and leverage tho)

Though, you can still make voluntary social security payments to get your western state pension - they just make you pay a higher rate than someone working in that country

Much better option to come to Thailand when you are young than struggle with all kind of disabilities once you reach the retirement age.

I was born poor, stupid and lazy, but fortunately computers and internet were invented during my lifetime so I could make money remotely. I came to Thailand in my 30's and I think this gave me several huge advantage over old men... one of the major ones is the quality of women I was able to marry and date. Being young also gives you drive to succeed instead of nursing the bottle and listening to bargirl lies all day long. Here comes the internet again where I was able to do a thorough research on all my potential long term gals. Once you have certain standards (no kids, University degree, a full time job) it is pretty easy for a guy in his 30's and 40's to find a quality long term Thai partner. I turned 50 this month and I think I would still have a chance if I was looking.

Imagine the shock and horror of going back to your own country and not being to survive when you are old you say. I don't even understand how can some long timers even utter these words when life in the West for old folk is about million times better. Yes, I am thinking about going back and I will look forward to working, playing bingo and socializing with grandmas in my 50's 60's 70's and hopefully 80's while the taxpayer foots the bill for my every medical need. Why? Because everything I wanted to do was already done years ago.

Going back to the nanny state when you reach senior age is not the end as many want you to believe. If you came to Thailand in your 60's you are doing it wrong.

"Life in the West for old folk is about million times better".

I suggest the OP check out the findings of the Royal Commission into Aged Care in Australia.

Sure, the taxpayer foots the bill for medical needs. However, unless one has private medical insurance,

it's a waiting list of 1-2 years. It can take 6 months to even get the initial consultation with the required specialist.

I am somewhat baffled by the proposition I should be bored out of my skull playing bingo with grannies when life is an adventure for me here.

You ought to try Testosterone supplementation.

Posting nonsense. Telling people who are 60 they should have moved to Thailand at 30? Too late now.

Great advice. Probably picked up from Tim Sharky's channel.

All just subjective nonsense this topic. If everyone thought the same then everyone would be living in the same place!

The dying bit...

Whats wrong with dying? Nice sleep in daily

Is it just me or do others not see the link between the topic heading and the actual topic ?

I work here and right now  i would be happy to continue working past retirement age as long as i was healthy enough to do so.

But not sure that's what the OP is asking.

Why people in their thirties would move to Thailand? They can get quality partners around their age, earn top bucks and send their children to top universities, not to the uni of Nakhon Nowhere. Moving in thirties to Thailand is for people without education and ambitions.

I guess for many that moved relatively young here work until death would be a necessity, not a choice. They don't have significant assets or pensions to support them through old age.

Good job i waited until my forties then, still with assets back home and a couple of pensions, plus there are plenty of us ex-pats here in very good jobs, thank you very much.

My point was i actually don't mind working and suddenly stopping at retirement would be a bit of a shock i think.

As if everyone has a dream life. The internet is a funny place.

The average person has 2 or 3 marriages and hates most of their jobs. That's the real world.

I always warn people about this because I was on the same track myself. If I was back in the US I would have been forced to find a job and be earning good money as a result but Thailand lets you cheat your way around this.

There's a YouTube vlogger in CM called "walk about Wayne" and he seems like he's on that track. Barely getting by in Thailand when  you're nearly 50 is crazy. Even if he gets a good job tomorrow there's not enough years left in his life to make up the loss. Good luck to the man, he's gonna need it.

I'm with you 100%. Chasing women when you're old is only of interest if you missed that chance when you were young. When I'm a pensioner I'll be spending my days enjoying the fresh air, fishing and gardening. Going back to the UK for a few months a year has made me realise that the simple things in life like walking along a river path are actually very pleasurable and I'd be much happier doing that in my final years than surrounded by vultures just waiting for me to die.

yep..is my way....bounce back n forth...come here 6 months..chill...end my 2 border hop +exts = 6 and then back home to work the other 6....one foot there..one foot here....15 yrs later.....

let the flaming begin..welcome bitter old white men--sorry in advance for being on your lawn

Sounds like a great life to me.

I am interest in how you do the 6 months in the states do you own a place or live with family? Getting a place in Thailand is easy and cheap but getting a new place every 6 months in the US would be a pain in the a$$.

In one way I wish I would have come to Thailand in my 30s but honestly I would not change much in my past life because I am happy now and feel really lucky to have had my life experiences. I would not want to work until I die and don't think I would have been able to stop working at 50 if I had worked 20 years in Thailand.
