Why did you choose Thailand?

I'm not a full time Thai resident, but I've obtained my LTR Visa. I'm living in Malaysia, and while I'm happy here at present I like to have a bolt hole, in case plans change.

So for me, Thailand is just an alternative home in Asia.

How about you? Why did you choose to live in Thailand rather than any other country?

I have long admired and collected SEA art, of which Thailand is the most refined. And then there are The Hilltribe's, who's art is up there with the best of so-called Primitive Art.

 

It takes some Hindu/Buddhist iconography knowledge and a broader understanding of Asian Art to get its wow factor.

 

In a time of Game of Thrones, Myth-interest, Marvel Movies, the Thai version of the Ramayana and the former lives of Buddha are at that level and still unknown.

 

Living in Chiang Mai is akin to a Western Art lover living in Florence. Not many people relocate here for the art, and you'll find them entirely in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

For me it was just random chance.  A customer gave me a round trip ticket to Thailand.  A year and 3 shorter trips later, I came here for good.

I didn't , Thailand choose me ,I was on my way to Costa Rica  

the long way round ,and ended up here .

Met my Thai wife in Egypt where she was working as a (genuine) masseuse and I was working a semi retired SCUBA dive guide. When things started to heat up in Egypt, to due the Arab spring and its consequences we decided that Thailand was a sensible alternative. She had a house here anyway, so it was a no brainer.

Recommended by a friend because of low cost of living and good food, warm all year around and with the same quality of services we are used to at home e.g. reliable water and electricity supply, public transport options from baht buses to NakonchaiAir plus railways (albeit infrequent and slow). Came for a holiday and indulged myself in LK Metro and also on the more relaxed 'dark side' of Pattaya and decided he was, of course, absolutely correct. When I discovered that my criminal record was no bar to obtaining a Non-O (Retirement) Visa and subsequent extensions I couldn't believe my luck!

Came to meet a girl (in 2001), but fell in love with the country. I stay because I really like Thai people.

As well as the food, the weather, the girls, the low cost of living, and the entertaining news.

Came here 30 years ago to set up a franchise from a UK engineering co. with a licensee Thai partner. The business took off, and I'm still here (and in other parts of SE Asia). Didn't really choose Thailand, as much as it chose me, I suppose.
