Alcohol Wholesalers Hit By Weak Holiday Season Sales

THREE alcohol wholesalers, two in Bangkok and one in Nakhon Ratchasima, said yesterday (Dec. 22) that the expected strong festive season sales has not materialised with purchases either only edging up slightly or downright plunging, Matichon newspaper said.

 

Mr. Somchai Pornrattanacharoen, owner of the S. Sappakit store and former president of the Thai Wholesale and Retailers Association, said overall purchasing power is still low and will likely remain so in Bangkok during the long New Year’s holiday as large number of residents are going to the provinces to celebrate.

 

This will boost sales outside Bangkok, particularly tourist cities, but it will be for a short spell.

 

“Right now the flow of wholesale orders for beer is not bustling, there is no (celebratory) mood in small shops.

 

“Although like before they have come to pre-order stocks since the end of November to gear up for New Year, this only increased by 10-20% from normal level, for example from one crate to two, but not as many as 10 crates as in the past.

You obviously haven't read that there is a plan to reduce tax on alcohol from Jan 1. By how much, we wait to see.

1. This is good for everyone, less drinking is a healthier lifestyle, and likely will result in less people getting killed from drunk driving incidents. If the liquor wholesalers and manufacturers make a little less profit, not a big deal for anyone but them.

 

2. The economy is soft, people keep denying this, but there's less spending power right now so people are cutting back. It's just a simple fact, the economy was decimated over the last few years, even prior to covid the economy was getting soft.

 

After "the Prayuth Decimation" all bets are off.

That's my choice too, I like the new Chang "cold brew" everyone around my village drinks Singha, which is too bitter for my taste. Beer Laos and San Miquel Blanca beat the "big 3" though in my opinion.

Maybe this will compel the new government to abolish the hideous taxes and duties on imported wines!   Since they seem to be looking for ways to garner more tourism and tourist spending.   Here's the said truth anyone living here day to day must suffer to have a decent glass of wine.  We get whacked heavily:

In Thailand for wine there is a tariff of 60 percent on imports. 

 All other taxes compound off from the imports cost, insurance, and freight (CIF) plus the tariff cost.

Thai owned hotels will be the last to realize this.  Charging over the top hotel rates so as to have there properties virtually empty.  

 

Then they'll ask for government help.

 

All the while international chains have already seen the writing on the wall.  Poor Chinese economy, wars, and after "COVID Travel" hangover from last season.

 

Rates will plummet this year,except for most of the Thai owned properties.

Well New year is still more than a week away and, in my experience, very few places stock up well in advance.

You may have some people celebrating at Christmas in the tourist areas, but it isn't really a Thai thing.
