The power of prayer. Do you believe or not.

I am sure the placebo effect works for people for themselves.

But whenever I read the typical American "thoughts and prayers", I always think: Why do you waste your time? If you want to help and do something, then do it - and don't talk to the tooth fairy or whatever you fancy.

What if I believe in God but not the power of prayer. (different topic?)

Nah just kidding. I don't believe in either but it gives some people solace.

I'm guessing it's an American thing.

Do Buddhists pray or just practice? I don't know anything about it.

When I see Thai praying ,I often wonder what they are praying for?

My imagination says $$$

I could be wrong 😃

I'm thinking it would be embarrassed to ask a million people on YouTube to pray for your health, and you end up getting worse.

But I guess they would say it was "gods will".

My wife prayed and then met me. So it must work. But I think now she prays more.🤔

It didn't help the millions who died in Nazi concentration camps or any other religious war for that matter, but then again the "believers" always have an answer...... if you lived, prayers/God saved you, and if you died, God wanted you to be with him in heaven. A win-win for them.

I'd like to think it works. Nothing to lose I guess.

I'm thinking "the Lord's prayer" and the "10 commandments" would be a good guideline to live by.

Some of those American preachers look like just plain whackoes.

I'll wait for the results of the randomised, controlled, double-blinded clinical study vs placebo on the power of prayer, to see whether I believe in it. Placebo has a 15 to 30% response rate in most things, and if placebo beats it significantly (meaning there is less than a 5% chance that the result was down to chance) I might believe it, unless the subjects were not randomised or controlled for nutty religious beliefs.

But for the simple minded, sure, they will take it on faith that prayer works, despite abundant evidence that a God who doesn't even exist will exert an influence in the world on their behalf. They'll die anyway, but not notice they've died or that prayer hasn't helped at all.
