Thai student suffers brutal punishment for playing game in computer lab

A 12 year old Thai student in Lam Plai Mat, Buriram Province, was reportedly beaten by a 40 year old mathematics teacher for playing a game called Takraw in the computer room.

 

The boy, identified as A (name changed), returned home crying with a swollen forehead and multiple injuries on his neck and back.

 

His grandfather, 70 year old Sompan, was shocked to see the boy’s condition and learned about the teacher’s severe punishment.

 

According to Sompan, the incident occurred yesterday. He discovered A’s injuries, including a swollen forehead, when the boy returned home crying after school. Upon further examination, he found additional injuries on the boy’s neck and back.

 

A revealed that his mathematics teacher had caused the injuries by hitting him on the forehead with his fist. Despite seeking refuge under a table, the teacher continued to assault him. The cause of this brutality was A playing Takraw in the computer room.

I get the teacher's frustration. I have two students that make me shake my head and honestly wonder "what the hell will they do to feed themselves when the time comes?" Has the urge to smack them crossed my mind? Of COURSE it has. However, there is NEVER an excuse to lay hands on a student, and if this teacher did indeed hit the student, then he must be removed and punished by more than just a wai and 500 baht.

Following the incident, the teacher visited A’s home to apologise. Though Sompan did not press charges, he appealed to the teacher not to repeat such actions, stressing that young children do not fully understand right from wrong.

 

Sompan should press charges, this teacher assaulted a child.

They must be taught that there are other methods of discipline and ways to sort out un-ruley children.

Beating them is  not one of them.

I doubt the school will follow this one up and punish the teacher either.

So sickening and angering. Even if the family won't press charges, there ought to be a way that the State can bring charges. There is no way in any sort of even relatively civilized world that this should go unpunished. At the VERY least, he should lose his job. And it would be preferable for him to spend at a minimum 30 days in jail along with a hefty financial penalty that would be difficult, but not impossible, for him to pay. How hard to you have to hit a kid to make his forehead swell! It didn't even sound like they brought the kid to the hospital! Plenty of ignorance to spread around on this one it sounds like.... And very little true respect for the humanity of a child.

It's a sad story if true. It's a shame that incidents like that could happen.

Time for better education of young teachers in university. I'm not sure if they got a subject like pedagogy?

Teacher is lucky this isnt my kid, he would not walk again. I would make sure his knee breaks beyond repair, to start.

It will be a deterrent to others. If you spank your kid when they deserve it, then later on when they pick up a brick to throw through a window, their ass will hurt and they'll remember "bad behavior results in punishment."

 

Really surprised you can't see that. This is a basic tenet of any justice system.

There are some people (adults) that will never evolve much further than animal level.

Therefore, they don't understand anything other than harsh treatment to re-educate them.

Children need to be taught right from wrong, but as any human knows, there are acceptable and humane ways to do this.

vitally important to change the thought process. what better way than to lose your job and have a criminal record. which ends up effecting the rest of your life.

I'm shocked to be honest to read this kind of statement in 2024. Violence was and is by no means a treatment for better/proper behaviour in children's education. This you learn as basics in university. How old are you?

This teacher should be terminated and prosecuted. Wether the victim presses charges or not. One doesn't leave a psychopath in a classroom. What a retard place.

We read very often of teachers assaulting students. We never, never, ever read of the teacher being punished to any extent, if at all. Teachers hitting students is part of the culture. As, come to it, is the kid's grandfather apparently raising the kid as no parent is mentioned.

The teacher assaulted the boy - severely. On top of wais. damages, loss of job, he deserves a 1 year minimum prison sentence

When I was 14 I had a teacher not unlike this sack of dog turds.

One day it was my turn to be hit on the back of my head with a great lump of a text book, I returned the favour to him and was kicked out of school

Fast forward 4 years and I am working evenings driving a tow truck.

I had a call to repo a car, I saw the name and took great delight in doing the job. 

Not sure how the Sack of Sh-t got to work after that

smart move, then you would end up behind bars having to pay for his rehab and everything else he claims. my friend in canada beat up his best friend after catching him in bed with his gf. it ruined him for quite a while. first thing he said last time i saw him is that he would never do it again. plenty of people in life talk tough... thankfully it is just talk

I have no dog in this fight. I went to school at a time when there was legal battery of children, with strap or cane usually.  I once watched open mouthed a 7 or 8 year  child being beaten by a teacher with fists on his back; and I also watched a 14 year old struck across the face with a metre ruler which broke and gashed a Y-shaped wound across the kid's face (all Catholic schools).  It sounds bad now in our snowflake age, but a) it was not as bad as the treatment earlier generations endured and b) there was no pointed complaining to your parents at home, because you would receive another beating. 

 

I tend to look at the desirability of any given behaviour at the outcomes. It is pretty clear to me, but likely won't be to any snowflakes who buy into wokeness and other modern idiocies. But despite kids being beaten severely throughout history, there is no evidence of any harm being done to the kids, and kids who were beaten at school often support the practice. Britain's brightest and best who built the Empire, brought the world the industrial revolution and so forth, were all sadistically beaten at British public schools (ie private boarding schools like Eton and Harrow) and it was considered that the practice was virtuous and made men of them. It was common when I was a teenager to get a bit of a thumping from police if caught doing something 'dodgy', even for doing nothing, just to keep you in line, and I had a couple of experiences myself....it was called having received a 'clip around the ear'

 

I tend to think that children are pretty robust and can handle a bit of violence from adults, be they parents, police or teachers without having any life long harm done to them.

 

One has to see the results of the beating to determine whether this bump on the forehead has destroyed the kid's brain or is a simply bump that will go down in a couple of days. So perhaps it is best not to judge the teacher at this stage. I don't know whether there are any laws against hitting children in Thailand, I know you cannot smack children in the US or UK and they usually enforce their laws on the rest of the world, but I cannot recall ever having seen a child hit here by parents in the 15 years I have been here; but my wife has tales of being regularly hit with a stick on her legs as a child. 

Please note that I am not espousing the return to daily Victorian canings for kids. But. equally I don't see that the prohibition on beating kids has achieved much when I see the violence in today's society, and I'm not appalled by this incident or supportive of lynching the teacher for a loss of patience, as I imagine he was concerned about damage to the computers in the computer room where the kid was practising his Takraw.
