No Easy Answers to Pattaya’s Homeless Problem

Featured Replies

Over the past several days there have been multiple news articles from us covering both complaints by local residents and tourists and relevant authorities responses to what appears to be a growing homeless problem in the Pattaya and Jomtien area.

For instance, just this past weekend fourteen Thai people were detained around Jomtien after numerous complaints of the homeless individuals being consistently drunk and on drugs and causing problems for people around Jomtien Beach. Six of them tested positive for illegal drugs.

Another homeless man in Jomtien was arrested this weekend for stealing the electric bike of an Australian ex-pat.

Last week, multiple migrant beggars from nearby countries, some with young children, were arrested in Pattaya and found to be in the country illegally. There were also concerns about if the children had been trafficked and that was being investigated as of press time.

They come for the bright lights, become unemployed and fall by the way-side..

every city has the same issue.

If you look around Nana there is a homeless problem there too. Mostly in the daytime.

I'm sure that the tourists are impressed

Homelessness is becoming more of a problem worldwide. Blame inflation, for at least part of the problem. Here you can also blame the Prayuth Decimation. 9 disastrous years of toxic, incompetent army rule took a huge toll on the nation.

It is a very complex issue, and cannot be dumbed down with simplistic political jargon. These are recent images taken in Los Angeles.

True. Those that live in vans and cars are called houseless or nomads, but they're still without a home. As you can see by those photos many are living in tents on the sidewalk.

Ironic placement of these two stories.

If only there were some empty place where homeless could stay....

A lady taxi driver I know in Pattaya is homeless, living in her car.

From what I gather, she doesn't like men (or women), so it's difficult for her to establish permanent living quarters.

I would think that a lack of money would be the reason why a person is homeless

She doesn't earn enough to make her car payments, buy gas and pay for a room.

If she could live with a man, problem solved.

Seems to be a problem in every city around the world. Hadn't been to London for a few years and noticed the upsurge in homelessness immediately. Only positive about Thailand is that the general climate is favourable for a one man tent on the beach. It's a dreadful situation for anybody to have to deal with.

If wishes were horses, then beggars could ride.
